Virginia Allows Same-Sex Parents Names On Some Birth Certificates

The Virginia Division of Vital Records has agreed to issue a gender-neutral birth certificate to a lesbian couple, showing both women's names on their son's record.

It now will show Diane Pineiro-Zucker as "Parent 1" and Debbie Pineiro-Zucker asand "Parent 2" on the birth certificate of their son, Elijah, whom they adopted in Virginia in 1999.

The move followed a Virginia Supreme Court ruling last year that gave the Pineiro-Zuckers, and two other same-sex couples, the right to have both partners' names on the certificate.

Virginia does not permit same-sex couples in the state to be co-parents but makes no mention of children adopted in Virginia by parents outside the state.

It might fly with some people in the Northern part of Virginia, but it isn't going to fly with folks down south. I hate Virginia. It is perhaps one of the worst states to live in as a gay person.

The tragic irony of this situation --- if these damn bigots can get their reactionary heads out of their hindside -- is that it's not about the parents. Instead, it's about the kids. It's the child's birth certificate which, legally, should document accurately WHO are the parents, period.

Religion and politics never should mix. That, and add law to the lethal mix. And you've got the religion-into-law Neanderthals. Blinded to all but their own twisted hypocrisy. At some point down the proverbial road, Virginia and the rest of the bible-thumping states should attempt to join the rest of society across the planet in the 21st century.
