Australian embassies, on direction from Attorney General Philip Ruddock, are refusing to give a certificate acknowledging a citizen's single status that is needed to marry in places such as the Netherlands.
The issue emerged after Peter Kakucska of Melbourne contacted his embassy in Austria, according to media reports, to obtain the needed certificate for a Dutch marriage.
The embassy refused after consultation with Ruddock.
In a response from Canberra, Australia's political center, Ruddock said embassies must refuse the documents necessary to enter into same-sex marriage elsewhere in the world....
