NYC Lesbian Becomes Council Speaker
http://www.365gay.com/Newscon06/01/010306nycCouncil.htm

Christine Quinn has earned a double distinction, becoming the first woman and the first out lesbian to serve as the speaker of New York City Council.

The Manhattan Democrat becomes the second most powerful person in city politics, after Republican Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Quinn's only serious rival, Councilman Bill de Blasio (D-Brooklyn), withdrew Monday after the powerful Queens delegation, with 13 Democrats, announced it was backing her.

"I am gratified for the support of my colleagues," Quinn said in a statement.

2. I can't resist
Who would have thunk that the Queens delegation would bring us a lesbian to lead council instead of a gay man?

3. 20 yrs ago we couldn't get a simple ...
non discrimination law passed thru this council... then dominated by RW DEM hacks who were in turn besieged by a vomitous assortment of 'Homosexuality is punishable by death' religious Nazis. What a zoo.

Now it does indeed look like we're running the place. Some things do get better... in time. With *dogged* effort. From such as Chris Quinn, and others.

I believe people are gonna like CQ and that we'll be hearing lots about her and from her on both local and national issues.
