British Synagogues To 'Marry' Gay Couples

Same-sex Jewish couples will be able to have a religious ceremony when Britain's Civil Partnership Act comes into effect on December 5.

The new law recognizes same-sex relationships with all the rights, privileges and responsibilities in the same way as opposite-sex marriages, but calls them partnerships, not marriages.

Temples and synagogues affiliated with Liberal Judaism have approved a new liturgy for gay and lesbian ceremonies. The liturgy, called "Covenant of Love", comes with instructions telling rabbis that the ceremony may be described as a “wedding”.

The service follows the format of traditional opposite-sex Jewish weddings.
