Utah Law Does Not Bar Same-Sex Benefits Court Told

(Salt Lake City, Utah) A Utah judge has been told there is nothing in the state's constitutional ban on same-sex marriage to prevent Salt Lake City from offering domestic partner benefits to its gay and lesbian workers.

A conservative political action group is fighting an executive order signed by Salt Lake Mayor Rocky Anderson in September granting health benefits to the partners of gay and lesbian city workers (story)

A suit filed by the Alliance Defense Fund alleges Anderson "flagrantly" violated Utah's constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

It asks the court to declare Anderson's order illegal and bar the city providing in any manner any benefits to same-sex couples.

The insurance company that provides health coverage for city workers also is suing the mayor. (story)

1. Those kinds of things happen when religion

is mixed with state affairs. You find a huge power struggle between religious leaders and government leaders. It's always been that way since people figured out how to form governments. At first the leaders were the shamans, etc. then governments came into being and the power struggle began.
In their infinite wisdom, our founders made a separation of church and state for this very reason. In their stupidity are trying to take down that separation and if they continue, they'll find out that soon the religious leaders will usurp their power.
