Suppression of homosexuals still packs a haymaker in the GOP electoral offensive, but peacetime is an out-and-out rout for the forces of live and let live. There's "Will and Grace" in prime time, lesbian offspring in the White House, domestic partner recognition by corporations and rainbow businesspeople lunching with politicians on all sides.
When the Republican governor and the rough, tough Republican prosecutor hand down executive orders forbidding employment bias based on sexual orientation, you have yourself a certifiable lost cause.
But racial supremacy was just as obviously doomed 50 years ago, and its loyalists refused to go down without a fight. One of their strengths was substantial numbers. One of their weapons was respectability.
Generational succession will bring the day when the sex lives of consenting adults will not be open to mainstream discussion as a criterion for firing or eviction. Those whose personal religion such private behavior offends will have to settle for private forums if they propose to be taken seriously.
