HomoQuotable - Sergio Viula: No such thing as an Ex-Gay
HomoQuotable - Sergio Viula

"Today I know that I was deceiving myself. But back then, I thought that every sentiment or attraction was a mere case of ‘temptation’ and that it could be overcome with prayer and dedication to god. In the group, we used to think, basically speaking, that being gay was a sin, which should be confessed and abandoned and, therefore, we would proselytize, counsel, pray, preach, recommend certain books, read the Bible – things that believers usually do, but focusing on homosexuality itself; unfortunately, always demonizing homogenic love. Nobody really quit being gay. There were relationships even within the group, between an activity and another, they would always find time for that." - Brazilian "ex-gay' leader Sergio Viula.

NOTE: Viula is the third major figure of the "ex-gay" movement to come clean in the last several weeks. All three now admit that they never once saw anybody actually convert to heterosexuality.

1. I think many bisexuals "may"
be able to limit their activity to one sex - and thus the confusion on the part of some and "conversion".

We're all on the sexual spectrum with more or less attraction to one sex or the other. Some are way at one end, some at the other, the rest sliding along somewhere in the middle.

I believe there are many many "bisexuals" - though few admit or practice. There would be many many more open/admitted "bisexuals" would society (and repressive religion) allow it.

2. That's possible, but being a Kinsey 6, I have no personal experience in it.

4. They're still not "ex-gay"
They're merely bisexuals who choose to only engage with the opposite sex (since it takes the heat off). Likewise the "former homosexuals" are merely gay people who pretend to be straight to please anti-gay bigots.

5. exactly.
I think that might cause some of the confusion, though, for some who choose to interpret it that way.

My ex eventually chose to only have sex with other gay males - there were a lot of reasons this was so - I think given half a chance, though (and only because his partner passed), he would still go either way.

Sometimes it's not a matter of "taking the heat off", it's a matter of being a committed relationship - on either side of the bi.

Some of those "former homosexuals" who have been brainwashed/religiously/socially pressured into PRETENDING to be straight (even to themselves) - are not former homosexuals. they're merely non-practicing homosexuals. They're still gay. Whether they engage in the act or not.
