NBC Green-Lights My Best Friend Is a Lesbo
A semiautobiographical comedy based on the real-life friendship of writers and longtime roommates Sascha Rothchild and Randi Barnes is being developed for NBC. The show, according to Deadline.com, will be cheekily titled My Best Friend Is a Lesbo. The project, from Warner Bros. TV and Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s Fake Empire studio, is about two female best friends — one gay, one straight — who become roommates and help each other navigate life, love, and dating in Los Angeles. Rothchild and Barnes will coauthor the script. This is a rare pairing of the two, who are not a writing team.

1. You just never know what's appropriate.
It makes one hesitate to say anything!

I always thought that "lesbo" was kind of a snark word; not quite rising to the level of a grievous insult, but a "rude term."

Of course, I'm the one who still does a head shake when these kids call their female friends "dude."

2. I myself don't like the term either.
But it is apparently going to be a National tv show is why I posted the article.

3. Well, that's a relief!
I sometimes wonder if I'm totally "out of it" in terms of modern vernacular. I do think there are some terms and phrases that are best left to the young, and only used by older people ironically if at all. I also know that some words fall in and out of favor as insults. I try to keep up, mainly for the purposes of understanding, though I don't use a lot of the new lingo.

I remember when I was young, cringing when I heard geezers talk about what was hep, hip, groovy and so forth--it didn't make them seem young(er) or cool, it made them seem a bit sad and pathetic. You have to let every generation have their own little catchphrases....but I never thought that lesbo was a terribly "nice" term.

Maybe this program will change the meaning of the word...!

5. Someone will have to provide the "adults" a primer as to what words have now become acceptable....

I continue to think "lesbo" is perjorative, as is "f_g."

I would have my tongue cut out before I would call someone the "N" word. But, rappers have retaken the term and apparently because Rihanna wears a necklace with the word "Cu_t" on it, then that, too is just fine and dandy. :sarcasm:

So, I guess I'll be needing my daily updates.... :eyes: Or not.....

7. Yep, I could use one of those, too...
WRT that "c" word that Rihanna has on her necklace, that's an odd one--it is a drop dead faint/ghastly term in USA, but in UK it's used in a more affectionate way on occasion. It's still not a compliment, but it is less of a "Hide the children!!!! Did you HEAR what he/she SAID?" type word over that side of the pond. Closer to the F bomb in terms of "ooh la la" effect. More common, less clout. They also use the "sod" term with great abandon.

Years ago, if anyone said "bloody" over that way, they'd all have a cow.

Times have changed, I guess.

6. Um, why can't they just call it "Best Friends" ??
Oh, I know - the shock value of the title and trying to get people to tune in to "see how they live" :eyes: ... as if GLBT folks don't deal with the same day to day issues as everyone else (in addition to a whole lotta other shit).

My best pal transitioned several years ago and her perspective is that she "just wants to blend in and live - to NOT be noticed as a transgendered individual".

8. You answered your own question--no one would watch.
I suppose the upside of this likely overly formulated little sitcom is that it is on at all.

Couldn't imagine this running opposite, oh, The Brady Bunch or Gomer Pyle.

In its own forced-premise way, it is a mark of progress I suppose.

9. That word is kind of a cartoonish insult-type word for me...
...due to a TV movie I saw when I was a young lad.

It might've been called "The Group".

Anyway, near the end of the movie, a young Larry Hagman is trying to insult this woman and he delivers this line (so filled with juvenile petulance in my imperfect memory) in a kind of a sing-song nyah-nyah way that'll live with me 'til my dying day: "I never figured you for a lesbo."

My sister and I laughed so hard we eventually got sent to our rooms. It was so immature and stupid that I've never been able to take seriously anyone who says that word...well...seriously.

The power of the insult was taken out of that word for me that day. Of course, I've never been the target of that word, either. My gut feeling is that it probably isn't the best idea for the name of a television program.

10. I see a title change in this show's future.
Maybe I'm just too sensitive, but "lesbo" is right up there with "dyke" for me. It's not a word I would like to see used in daily conversation.

11. We don't even like reality shows to begin with
and with a tacky title like that ("Lesbo" WTF?) that one definitely won't be on our viewing list. What's next, a show following the transition of a "Tranny"?

13. this is a sitcom
not a reality show. It is based on a true story.

14. I stand corrected
But we still won't be watching it with a title like that. It's sad that our lives are still acceptable to mock openly with terms like "Lesbo".
