State Conservative Party may pull Saland’s endorsement over gay marriage vote

http://www.midhudsonnews.com/News/2011/June/28/Saland_NYCons-28Jun11.html

BROOKLYN – The chairman of the State Conservative Committee said he expects the party to pull its endorsement of State Senator Stephen Saland (R-Poughkeepsie) for his vote in support of gay marriage in New York.

Michael Long told MidHudsonNews.com on Monday that his party stands for traditional values of marriage only between a man and woman and every candidate seeking their endorsement knows this going into an election.

“The Conservative Party has to be true to its principles and those principles are supporting marriage between a man and a woman and we can no longer endorse people who don’t respect that or honor that commitment,” he said.

Prior to his vote, Saland said while he was on the fence about same sex marriage, he felt he had to support it based on his upbringing. “My parents taught us to be respectful, tolerant and accepting of others and to do the right thing,” he said prior to his vote late Friday night.

4. In New York there is...
it's one of the minor third parties, that usually ends up cross-endorsing a major party candidate.

There also used to be a Liberal Party, but they folded a few years ago.

5. NY is the only state which adds up all the votes a candidate gets from all parties ...
rather than just add up what each party gets. This allows third parties to have some influence because a candidate's name on the party's line means more votes for the candidate.

6. Which is a shame. What this does is help tell a candidate who his supporters are
Voting for a Democratic candidate by pulling the lever of his listing on the Liberal party line, for instance, rather than on the Democratic one is a statement.

I did this when I voted for Bloomberg last time. I voted for him on a third party line, not the Repug line. No way am I pulling a lever on the Repug line. That way Bloomberg knows how many of those who support him are NOT Republicans and thus it empowers him to be more progressive.
