5. Everyone I ever knew in Orlando (82-86)...
and well over half the guys I've known in DC since 89.

Anyone of our age is shattered by all the deaths we've experienced over the past thirty years.

I'm sorry for your personal loss. I can't face the thought of losing that one, last person.

7. I had SO many beautiful patients in 87-90
lost teachers, nurses, construction workers, real estate agents,lawyers....all to the horrible disease.
I'll never forget Brian, a 23-year-old from Dallas. His whole family consisted of the drag queen sorority he belonged to.He had been disowned by his "real" family(although I let his sister sneak in to see him when he was dying).
I'll never forget his family- I ended up caring for 50% of them over the next few years.

8. My dear Johnny, my soul brother. So many college and work mates...
Johnny might have lived longer if only the FDA had released AZT for more than just test studies earlier. The FDA released it within a couple of months after his death. He was 28.

Johnny, if it weren't too soon, I'd almost swear that my son is you reincarnated.

Oh, and how could I forget E. I think of him and get sad every single time I walk down Hudson Street. We had dinner at the Hudson Cafe, which is now something else but I think of him then and when I'm at The Monster or The Hangar, or when I pass yet another cafe or bar where we'd hang out. :(

12. Glen, my daughter's childhood best friend
I watched you grow up. You skinned your heart, and skinned your knees. You came out right after my daughter did. You came back from Iraq safe and sound. You won't tell us why your 2 year old car exploded into flames when you put your key in the ignition. You have told my daughter, and me, that it's ok, you are happy, and will always be there for us.

Thank you for being you. We, and everyone who knew you, loved you. You were, are, a very good person.

I know you are at peace. I appreciate that you will always be watching over my daughter. Love you, Mrs. H.

14. My older brother
AJ.

He was kind, compassionate, smart, funny. He was a great brother and he was a good friend. I miss him. He was 46 when he died. He was 9 years older than me. Now I am 9 years older than him.

I can't list the rest. I'm afraid I'd forget someone.

15. Herbert.
I was around 12 years old. He was the accountant for my dad's business. Always a great guy with a cool bike he let me and my sister ride on it. Damn, he had his own little disco dance room in his apartment, and I loved to play with the controls. He was a friend of the whole family. Great guy, gentle and loving; best babysitter in the world.

Co-founder of the Swiss Aids Federation in 1985. He was one of the early ones to catch HIV. He didn't make it.

18. Bruce, my dearest friend
1953-1995. We could finish each other's sentences. It's been over 15 years now, and I still think about him several times each week. We both grew up trapped as Southern Baptists in small-town Texas. We sang duets together at church--one of his favorites was "Precious Lord, take my hand." Damn, I miss him. I love you, Bruce.

19. My uncle Albert
He was one of the first black designers to work for Christian Dior, and he used to tell all kinds of amazing stories about backpacking through Europe and Asia when he got out of the Air Force (and all the pretty boys he had chasing him!).

He passed in 1989, when I was eight years old, but I didn't know it was from AIDS until I was older. He was extremely talented, eccentric, beautiful inside and out (even when he was three sails to the wind), and I miss him every day of my life.

22. My brother Kim
Edited on Wed Jun-22-11 10:09 AM by MuseRider
who died at the age of 47 in 2002 of AIDS related lymphoma. He is gone but not forgotten. I remember him every day, frequently still think I should send him a link to things or call him. He is remembered every year in Houston for what he did as a musician and just all around incredible human being with a Musical Theater Award in his name.

I love you Kim, you are still a better musician and a better human than I am and better than 99% of anyone I have ever known.

He kept the Wizard Of Oz alive for me because every time I watch it I remember him playing Dorothy as a child with pigtails made of pajama bottoms. We had such fun. He was the only accompanist I would use when he was around town. He made me love Opera. He loved me and I loved him. Sadly the only thing he ever really let me do for him was to care for him as he sickened and died. I did that with a constant dedication one only does when one is losing something dear to them and his last words to me were that he had never felt so loved. I gather strength from the fact that I could give him that in return for everything he had always done for me. We were very much alike, his friends never fail to comment that we have the same huge eyeroll :).

Only the good die young.

Wonderful but very sad thread William. I appreciate reading it and remembering with others here. I does always help a little to share.

EDIT to remove his last name, not sure he would have like that out there
