Gay Parents Bashed - Primetime from ABC News
Primetime from ABC News: Gay Parents Bashed

What would you do if you saw gay parents berated by a waitress?
Interesting reactions in TX and NY.

6. The comparison with New York, for me, was both surprising and not surprising.
There are many popular myths about New York, one of which is that there is no homophobia here, and that conversely, there is a LOT of it in Texas.

I would also like to know where exactly in New York that the segment was filmed. If it was in Queens, then that would make sense to me, since many parts of Queens are populated with people from the islands or else with people who are simply homophobic, whether due to religion or else family backgrounds.

Three cheers for Texas' Donovan, though. That made me mist up a little. :)

10. There is more to the NY reaction I think. There is a big fear of getting involved here, particularly
in the outer boroughs. Its not as bad as it used to be in the Kitty Genovese days (look it up, it's heartbreaking), but people are wary of helping out when they are bystanders. In manhattan, people know there is a massive police presence and cameras everywhere so they know they have backup if they confront someone doing something wrong. If someone started gaybashing in manhattan, I think they would be literally chased out of the borough.

Not sure about your singling out of Queens in particular. Astoria, where I live, is known to be both one of the most ethnically diverse places in the world, and a place that is very accepting of GLBT folks. These attributes attracted me to Astoria when choosing a place to live.

11. Years ago, my partner and I searched for apartments in Queens, and
we were told, implicitly, that gay couples weren't welcome to rent in places like Richmond Hills and Forest Hills. Granted, that's hardly enough to make a generalization, and I'm not trying to persuade anyone that Queens is bad or anything.

Nonetheless, I've lived here for 15 years and based upon my general observations, that is my personal assessment.

I'm very familiar with Astoria, and I'm aware that there is a gay district - I have a friend who lives in Long Island City so I'm up in Astoria all the time. Cheers. :)

12. OK, but Queens has TWO (2) popularly elected openly gay DEM officials.
Edited on Sat May-21-11 07:19 PM by Smarmie Doofus
City Council members Van Bremer and Dromm. Both elected w. a lot of support from immigrant communities.

14. Means nothing to me. At one place I worked in Midtown, the cleaning lady would
chat me up - she was originally from Puerto Rico but had lived here for decades. It was she who educated me that as to why many immigrant communities are so homophobic, you have to consider where they came from, and that island people especially are deeply homophobic. That was not my feeling at the time, but as years have passed, I now realize that she had a valid point. That a couple Dems from immigrant communities are pro-gay, well, so what, frankly.

15. Closeup, they're not just pro-gay they ARE gay.( And they're white.)
And they both got elected w.large #s of foreign-born ( including the isalnds) votes.

Island cultures are cut off, obviously. They tend to be inbred,... in terms of thinking. That makes for monolithic, rather unimaginative and reactionary political and social ideas.

But environment *changes* people. I'm sharing a work space with two adults, both Jamaicans this year and so far neither has tried to kill me. Rather they *like* me. And yes, they both know.

18. Farmers Branch? Wow.
That name rang a bell.

On May 12, 2007, Farmers Branch became the first in the nation to prohibit landlords from renting to most illegal immigrants.

19. For those who stood up and took a stand for what is right I applaud them, for the hater who high
fived the waitress and then lied that he did that "for the food", just a typical lying, phony Thug.
