Palm Coast teen says teacher singled him out for being gay
A Palm Coast mother has decided to pursue a lawsuit against the Flagler County School District.

This, after her 15-year-old son said one of his teachers singled him out for being gay.

Luke Herbert told News 13, "It hurts. I may be different, but I'm still human and for them to treat me like that is ridiculous."

As a freshman at Flagler Palm Coast High School, Herbert said high school has been tough, especially since he's gay.

1. My daughter is lesbian
She had no problem in NEW YORK 20 years ago in HS. If she did, I also would have sued the district.

3. It just amazes me that this happens from teachers in school with so much information out there for
them. We live in Kansas and I have a gay son. He had one problem, one time, from one of the coaches. And my son wasn't even bothered by it. He was actually telling a funny story and repeated the teacher's comments and I was upset about it. I talked to the principal and he assured me that it would never happen again. It has not. If I can get that support in "backwards" Kansas, you would think the coasts would have no problems!

5. I just had a PTSD moment, remembering being a gay teen years ago...
I don't know what this particular teacher did or didn't do. But I remember vividly what it feels like to be gay in high school.

My heart goes out to the young man. I urge restraint on vitriol against the teacher until we know some facts.

6. Good! School district should be sued and teacher fired! We have "0" tolerance for
other stuff - this should be "0" tolerance too. Show the teacher the door.

7. I went to school in Palm Coast.

Small town, I didn't go to Flagler Palm Coast High school, I went to Matanzas High school on the other side of town. I'm also Gay. PCHS was a shithole where they sent the losers they didn't want at the newer Matanzas, which was way nicer. I would have been very comfortable being openly gay at Matanazas. There were actually several really openly femininet gays at our school and I never heard anything about them getting bullied.

Never came out of the closet, but I never got the vibe I wouldn't be accepted if I did. Nor did I ever see a gay student getting bullied for being gay.

PCHS was just a shithole. They should send this kid to Matanzas, he'll probably be much happier there.

8. Trying to reach post threshold so I can post a thread.
It's difficult for me to visit these discussion boards without getting upset. What is it with our education system? When it comes to helping a student in a more personal way, high school faculty prefer not to get involved and create a situation between the student and parent that could lead to a termination of employment; however, in spite of the existing culture of paranoia we still get odd-jobs like this.
