Bill to limit reproduction procedures for gays, singles dropped
Edited on Wed Oct-05-05 08:38 PM by IndianaGreen
Congratulations to all DUers, Dailykos, et al posters and bloggers for the tremendous effort they put out to bring to light what would have been an obscure committe vote.

I am sure the cockroaches will try again some other time, but not this time.

This shows once again that GLBT rights and women's rights must be defended by all of us. To deny one basic rights to one group of people is to deny them to all of us!

Bill to limit reproduction procedures for gays, singles dropped

INDIANAPOLIS -- A proposed bill that would prohibit gays, lesbians and single people in Indiana from using medical science to assist them in having a child has been dropped by its legislative sponsor.

State Sen. Patricia Miller, R-Indianapolis, issued a one-sentence statement Wednesday about her decision to drop the proposal.

"The issue has become more complex than anticipated and will be withdrawn from consideration by the Health Finance Commission," she said.

Miller said earlier this week that state law does not have regulations on assisted reproduction and should have similar requirements to adoption in Indiana.

But Betty Cockrum, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Indiana called it government intrusion.

"It feels pretty chilling," Cockrum said Tuesday.

1. Thank goodness...
That was the craziest shit I've ever heard of. But as you said, I'm sure it will stealthily re-emerge at some point.

2. "Complex"---yeah, I was wondering how they would handle it if
someone did the deed in another state, then returned to Indiana, would they go after them??? Would they have a "spy" provision for reporting on your neighbor??

3. I read the proposed bill this morning
It was so Nazi-istic. (The Nazi’s were obsessed with sexual reproduction and made 100’s and 100’s of laws regulating what went on in everyone’s bedrooms).

This Rightwing nut needs to be driven from office ASAP.

The odds of this legislation getting out of committee was almost non-existent. It is good that DUers catch and fight this kind of lunacy immediately. Great job IndianaGreen! Thank you !

5. Yeah, Aunt Lydia got slammed
Sorry, my new name for Patricia Miller is Aunt Lydia. One only needs to read Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale" to understand how she fits that name to a "T"

10. You are quite right about that. Everyone should read that book.
What must M. Atwood think about how her book seems so right on today.

8. I was SURE my state had gone insane!
Glad to see "Aunt Lydia" was forced to back down.

We Hoosiers need to be extra-vigilant this session, lest this piece of tripe gets re-introduced as an ammendment to a bill modifying Crappie daily creel limits or something else equally low-profile.

Now for that "Protection of Marriage Act"
Still waiting to hear from Brandt on THAT one.

need to do some serious introspection about their personal thpought processes. They have to realize they have some true wackos living among 'em.

"They have to realize they have some true wackos living among 'em."

TRUST ME - a (slim) majority of the Indiana population already realizes this! I do what I can EVERYDAY to turn the tide.

Of course what you have to say goes just as well for any state in the union, any country in the world.

On Edit: THANK YOU to everyone who wrote and called in to support human rights and to send the cockroach back into the shadows (for the moment).

:hi:

13. Is it Frau Miller or Nurse Ratchet?
Know thy enemy:

Frau Miller, the nurse from the uber-repug movement from hell.

“Senator Patricia L Miller has served in the Indiana State Senate since 1983. Senator Miller has served Indiana on numerous legislative committees and as an active member of the Republican Party at the national, state and county levels. She has been extremely active in the community having served n dozens of ministries for the Methodist Church at the local, district and state level...”

“Recently the Indiana Senate passed Senate Joint Resolution 7 on a vote of 42 to 8. The proposal to amend Indiana's Constitution to ban same-sex marriage now moves to the Indiana House of Representatives for their consideration. Authored by Senator Brandt Hershman (R-Wheatfield), SJR 7 would also bar similar legal structures such as civil unions, threaten domestic-partnership benefits, and endanger other legal protections for unmarried families...

For example if you live in ZIP Code 46219, your Senator is probably Patricia L. Miller, Republican.”

“...How curious that electable Republicans will do everything in their power to strongarm and legislate that pregnancies never end in abortion… while trying to ensure that certain people may never parent natural or adopted children. Unless they have a state license...”

“The required information includes the fertility history of the parents, education and employment information, personality descriptions, verification of marital status, child care plans and criminal history checks. Description of the family lifestyle of the intended parents also is required, including participation in faith-based or church activities...”

20. Proving once again - there is more than corn in Indiana.
We have corn-fed 16th-century-mold elected officials.
Make that 'moldy' elected officials.

24. Frightening to think that a nurse would ignore
her medical background and fore go compassion in favor of being an ideologue.

I would think that she would find ways to help those who want to bring a child into this world and provide them with love and nurturing, while at the same time encouraging those who don't want to have children to find safe ways to avoid conception.

as to why a gay person, a lesbian (gay?) or a single person would be in a fascist knuckledragging state like Indiana in the first place. Get out while you can.

Northern Indiana is a world apart from southern Indiana, the former home of the Kay Kay Kay.

22. They are all over- but they started in Evansville, In.
http://www.centerforhistory.org/indiana_history_main7.html

>A man named Joe Huffington was chosen by Simmons and other top Klan officials to start organizing the Klan in Indiana. Huffington’s first base of operations was located in Evansville, Indiana. In the late summer of 1920 he began preparations to bring the Klan to Indiana. It was not long before Huffington met a young man named D.C. Stephenson. <

>The Klan even made inroads into Indiana churches. The Reverend William Forney Harris of the Grand Avenue Methodist Church preached in 1922 that secret societies like the Ku Klux Klan would not get his support. However, these were times of "moral decay," and as such, any organization that stood for decency and order ought not to be shunned. <

Ever notice how churches and coercion by fear of moral decay go hand in cloven hoof?

26. I Live In NE Indiana, Just Ten Miles From Both Ohio and Michigan...
And yet, twenty minutes south of me is a house with a sign by the side of the road proclaiming the resident a proud member of the KKK.

DEFINITELY not just a "Southern" Indiana sewing circle.
