Hundreds braved treacherous winter weather Monday evening to go to the Iowa State Capitol and speak out about a proposed state constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.
The Iowa House Judiciary Committee held a public hearing to discuss the matter, which is expected to be debated by the full House later this week.
The committee voted last week to back the amendment, sending it to the full House. But some members asked to schedule a hearing to get input from the public on the contentious issue, said Rep. Richard Anderson, R-Clarinda. Anderson is chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and a co-sponsor of the bill, House Joint Resolution 6.
“We’re here to represent the people,” he said. “And it gives people a better sense of ownership and a sense that they were able to share their views.”
