NC GOP hopes to pass anti-marriage amendment
NC GOP hopes to pass anti-marriage amendment

(Raleigh, NC) The economy dominated the fall campaign, but leaders among North Carolina’s social conservatives believe the Republican sweep at the legislature should finally permit a vote on a state constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

North Carolina is the only state in the Southeast that hasn’t approved an amendment restricting marriage to one man and one woman. Democratic leadership in the legislature has refused to consider GOP-penned bills on the issue for several years, and gay rights organizations have offered strong opposition to what it called imprinting discrimination permanently into state law.

Now, with Republicans solidly in the majority in the General Assembly starting this January for the first time in more than a century, chances for a vote in the House and Senate are fairly strong, GOP lawmakers said.

Until now, legislative leaders “have just turned a deaf ear,” said the Rev. Ron Baity, senior pastor of Berean Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. He has helped lead rallies of thousands of Christian conservatives in Raleigh asking lawmakers to vote on a marriage amendment.

4. Support Equality NC... the reason that this has not been able to pass yet!
from that story...
“We are definitely concerned that the new leadership is far more likely to bring up a vote,” said Ian Palmquist, executive director of Equality North Carolina. “People are definitely looking to North Carolina because we have been so successful at blocking an amendment in the past.”

6. An amendment of that sort appears in WV every session...
Fortunately, two well-respected Democrat women (from my district) always seem to bottle it up in committee or something, much to the annoyance of the 'family values' crowd.

7. Excellent that you can keep it in committee!!

May it stay that way. We had the same thing- it always would get stuck in committee somewhere...due to some awesome dems!
However, with the loss of the house and senate control, we can no longer do that. It's going to be easily pulled out of committee.
Now it's up to US to stop it.

Currently, NC is the only "Southeastern State" that doesn't have a DOMA in its' constitution. I fear that this will change soon, and am dreading the day that I wake up and see the headline in the paper that the Rethugs finally got this passed.

8. It's a done deal
The Democrats have been able to kill it in committee for the last couple of years, but this time they won't be able to. Republicans took over both houses of the NC Leg for the first time in 100 years. There's a lot of pent-up shit that they are just salivating over, and this is one of them. Asshats.

9. We need to become better at the art of the poison pill amendment.

The repugs have been killing bills in state legalisation's very well over recent years by inserting "poison pill" amendments.

So how about we insert some poison pills of our own into every attempt to pass DOMA into any state constitution? It seems to work for them every time.

ELIMINATES THE LAW ALLOWING MARRIED COUPLES TO DIVORCE. -INITIATIVE- CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT. Changes the -insert state- Constitution to eliminate the ability of married couples to get divorced in -insert state- . Preserves the ability of married couples to seek an annulment. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local government: Savings to the state of up to hundreds of millions of dollars annually for support of the court system due to the elimination of divorce proceedings.

Why are we not fighting fire with fire?

10. Disgusting...
Fucking "famblee values" asshats. I'm sure the GOP is looking to settle lots of scores--a very bitter, vengeful lot, the GOP--and GLBTs are near the top of the list if not already there.
