Students disciplined for defacing dorm with anti-gay graffiti

Southern Oregon University is not expelling the two students who defaced a dorm with anti-gay slurs, Fox 12 Oregon reports.

Rather, the university hearing board mandated that Blake Adkins and Kevin Novonty live off-campus and complete community service hours at the university’s Queer Resource Center, the Women’s Resource Center and the Multicultural Center.

The students wrote the slurs in the hallway of a gender-neutral floor. While the floor is not designated specifically for gay students, many gay students opt to live there. Adkins and Novonty later apologized for their actions and claimed they defaced the hall not because they are homophobic, but because they were bored.

In addition to the community service and residential restrictions, the students also must attend a gay rights meeting in the fall.

3. The actual act may have been spurred by boredom, but

the homophobic message is clearly wired into their thinking. That would be the ONLY reason they would choose that message to send with their vandalism to relieve "boredom."

... though if they stick to the "cause we were bored" excuse it hardly fits the crime. Maybe they should be supplied with Grand Theft Auto ( it's a video game).

According to wadeonbirmingham.com, the kids were convicted in December 2006. two got 8 years federal time, one got seven. They all got two years concurrent state time. Plus: $3.1 million in restitution and 300 hours of community service.
