Openly transgender conservative pol Donna Milo - wait till you hear her views on equality

I'm having a difficult time grasping the positions of Donna Milo, who seeks to serve Florida's 20th U.S. Congressional district, a seat currently held by Democrat Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Milo, who is openly transgender, is also conservative, perhaps shockingly so to many. Mike Signorile interviewed Milo today:

While she confirmed to me that she is in favor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act ("of course"), it turns she is opposed to marriage equality, giving the religious line on marriage being between "a man and a woman." On the issue of adoption Milo also believes that, though kids should go to gay and lesbian parents if it means they'll be in an institution, "traditional families" should have priority over gays. She also believes the government should not have a role in funding gender reassignment surgery for transgender people.

I think my disconnect here is the lack of political empathy. As she said to the Miami Herald:

"I'm an American. I make my way on the basis of ability. My triumphs are based on my abilities, not on a label or a crutch.''

3. He was a conservative male asshole
before he became a transgender conservative asshole. Same old same old conservative line "I got mine (don't care if I stepped on my mother to get it) now you get yours, and if you can't, shut the fuck up.

4. What we need to understand is that not every one is capable of reason...
Donna Milo is one...she thinks that her ingrained prejuidices and ignorance are actual thoughts...they are no more thoughts than the words a parrot might speak.

I personally can do without his despicable support of Israeli terrorism. nothing sickens me more than a gay man flacking for far right racists.

9. You would not know that form her campaign page!
Edited on Tue May-25-10 01:57 PM by CarlaLevin
She goes on about how she married her high school sweetheart and they were blessed with their son and daughter? I am not one of those people who thinks politician's should be an open book BUT if you are going to publish this little "Ozzie and Harriet" fairytale of your life, it is just a BIT disigenuous not to mention that your high school sweetheart was your wife, at the time you were male, and you are no longer together.

And at the risk of generalizing, I would be a little worried about the intellectual fitness for Congress of a candidate who made it all the way til 12th grade before suddenly realizing the need to help support the family and so had to quit and get a GED? Sounds like a rose colored way to say i quit or failed out of high school

P.S. - I looked a little further and see that she is open about her prior gender once you get past that first page, so I was a little too snarky too quick. still bizarrer to be anti equal rights though

6. Reminds me of Ayn Rand
I read a review of a recent biography that said she was basically a leech in her personal life.

15. must be nice to be wealthy enough to have that perspective
most of the transgendered persons I've known (who wanted or had surgery) have gone into massive debt to do it, or haven't been able to do it due to the costs.

The AMA now recognizes surgery as the appropriate way to deal with "gender identity disorder", so it SHOULD be covered by insurance (or, my preference, by government-provided universal health care).

She can go to hell...that's the most publishable comment I can make.

18. It Think Loki Summed Her Up Pretty Well...
As long as she gets hers, she doesn't care about everyone else...and is that not the quintessence of most conservative political thought?

It is funny that she carries on about the "Ozzie and Harriet" scenario when she is now a woman and no longer with the woman she married when she was a man. The disingenuousness and the hypocrisy of so many right-wingers never fails to amaze me.
