North Carolina teen boys can go to prom together
After the controversy over Mississippi lesbian teen Constance McMillen being banned from prom simply for wanting to take out her girlfriend, I just found this really positive story from North Carolina.

Two boyfriends, simply identified as "Chase and Jordan", got to go to prom together! They attend Starmount High School in Boonville, NC. Shattered is the stereotype of homophobia southern hicks.

Still...this reeks again the image of "male privilege".

3. That's great.
I hope to read soon that the whole student body had a great prom.

alp227, I don't think "male privilege" comes into play here; more a reflection of two schools' differing policies on gay students. Chase and Jordan's school held an inclusive prom. Constance's school made homophobia their policy. The actual sex of the student(s) is irrelevant.

4. "Male Privilege"?
By and large, the concept of lesbianism is far more palatable to the American public than male homosexuality. You can thank the straight frat-boy mentality for that.

There is no privilege being extended to gay men.

6. That is great news
I have been through that area of North Carolina and it is a little more progressive and further removed from the dark ages than some other areas.

7. It's a very small town, towards the West, a few miles south of the Virginia border
2000 census showed 25% of the county under 18

8. This actually surprises me
The area in question is very rural, and Boonville really is a tiny town. It's in Yadkin County, which is now becoming wine country but in the past was filled with tobacco fields. Heavily Republican territory - I just looked on the Board of Elections web site, and Republicans outnumber Democrats 13,000 - 5,000 in the county. So it's definitely not a progressive oasis like Chapel Hill or Asheville! A lot of my cousins went to Starmount High School. This story is great, and it gives me a little hope for the future!
