Where America's gay couples live

Voters in Maine recently decided to repeal a law that allows gay couples to wed—a reverse for gay-rights activists in normally liberal north-east. In 2008 Maine had the second highest concentration of gay households of any state, with over eight in every 1,000 households said to be headed by partners of the same sex, according to research based on census data by the Williams Institute, a gay rights think-tank at UCLA. Those states where gay marriage is legal or where same-sex partnerships are recognised have a higher proportion of same-sex couples than the national average of 4.7. The District of Columbia is home to most gay households with over 14 for every 1,000.

1. Houses mostly, and apartments
That would by my first guess.

Maybe some trailer homes, condos, and houseboats thrown in as well.

2. This may be slanted...
because same-sex couples that live in more bigoted areas (like the Bible Belt) may be less likely to declare their status than those who live in the more liberal zones.

3. Those numbers would be far higher in DC absent the stigma.
I don't know a single same-sex couple who live together. Everyone seems to maintain separate addresses.

4. Gays and lesbians are 19% of the electorate in DC, says a DC council member
and others say more like 15%, according to a story in Washington Post today.
