Ann Powers: Until an out gay rock star is no longer an anomaly.
But I don't agree with those who are saying his routine was just a tired attempt to shock. What he did won't be mundane until no one in America flinches when two men kiss on the street. Or until an out gay rock star is no longer an anomaly.

1. As an escape from Idolocrity that might have doomed him . . .
The AMA performance was a smashing success. Lambert isn't from Kansas and probably would prefer not even to fly over the place. I just wish he'd been able to trot out his incredible voice (where'd it go?) and that the choreography wasn't so cruddy.

I have no problem with the content of the choreography, but it was muzzy and lame. Despite all his theatrical training, I think Lambert needs (like any star of the calibre I expect him to be) a movement coach, and maybe a choreographer who'll tell him "no."

But kicking over the traces? Give him a ten.

3. I actually just listened to it . . . it's really good. Better than I expected from the reviews
Which seemed to be painting it as insanely overproduced -- which it is -- but the voice that blew everybody away still shines through.

5. LOT of the CD is on youtube.com
.. and as the other poster said.... overproduced / standard cookie-cutter AmId stuff... but that voice... amazing.

Hopefully maturity will bring both a stronger, less interested in proving, Adam Lambert.

But if he wants to be a David Bowie or Alice Cooper, it's his decision.. NOT mine.

4. Ann Powers rocks.
I saw a shitty letter attacking Powers this week in my LA Times.

She's the best thing since Robert Hillburn left.
