Wyoming has the 5th-highest percentage of same-sex spouses, legally or self-described, survey shows
Source: Casper Star-Tribune

... Legally married or not, same-sex couples in Wyoming are disproportionately likely to refer to themselves as married, according to U.S. Census data released last week.

Even though gay marriage is illegal in Wyoming, the state has the fifth-highest percentage of same-sex spouses — legally or self-described — of any state in the nation. That’s an estimated 2.28 same-sex married couples per 1,000 households.

... Gay marriage scholars and activists offered a variety of potential reasons why Wyoming had such a high percentage of same-sex “spouses.”

Many gay and lesbian couples in Wyoming may call themselves married as a show of defiance in one of the most conservative states in the nation, said Jason Marsden, executive director of the Matthew Shepard Foundation, a Denver-based gay-rights organization named after a gay University of Wyoming student who was murdered in 1998.

1. 0.23 % ?/? ZOMG!! TEH HORROR!!1!
I mean, even if you know only 100 neighboring households, there's still nearly a ONE IN FOUR chance that one of them will be a gay couple!! The value of traditional marriage is at stake by some obscure logical argument which this margin is too small to contain!

2. I think your math's wrong.
.23% is nearly 1 in 400, not 1 in 4.

3. And if you have 100 chances, there's a one-in-four chance of getting it

5. Actually, it should be ...
1-((1-0.00228)100) (the probability of finding AT LEAST one gay couple as neighbors) ... but it would be hard to fit that into a catchy radio spot. ;)

6. well apparently we want to marry box turtles and dogs and sheep but clearly
even in Wyoming, a fellow adult is the best choice for a partner.

7. i see a little humor to this one
being a wyoming native and having traveled the u.s. quite a bit i haft to chuckle at this one. one has too keep in mind that our population in the state is small, and i aint talkin small, i mean teeni tini compared to most. it's kinda like walking into a gymnasium with 20 people and seeing how much room their is around, ok, so out of that bunch of 20 people figure 2 are gay, big deal, ill probably wander around the gym most of the afternoon and never run into the 2 that are gay, and if i do, ill keep wandering and may never bump into them again.
that being the case those two gays can chat together about being married all day long and no one would probably notice. not unless a reporter comes by and says, " hey you two gays, are you calling yourself married ??" then with a definitive yes he takes a quick headcount, does a little math and says, wow i have a story here everyone should hear about. ha ha ha yea, big story here boys, now move along.
ah well, i guess being the equality state must have a new meaning now :)
