Atlanta Protest to Mark Anniversary of Prop. 8 in CA at state Capitol

One-year to the day after the largest mass LGBT demonstrations in Georgia in at least a decade, organizers look to return to the site of their greatest success by hosting a “We’re still here!” protest Nov. 14 at the state Capitol.

“I think the message is that it’s great we all marched on D.C., but there are still issues that need to be addressed,” organizer Jeff Schade said. “It is going to be focused more on the state issues rather than federal issues. Even though hate crimes passed on the national level, we still need it on the state level, we’re waiting on equal employment protections, we’re waiting on a lot of things in Georgia.”

A year ago Schade wasn’t an activist, but came together with others to pull off a mass rally on the steps of the Georgia Capitol and a candlelight vigil at the corner of 10th and Piedmont. The group used Facebook and other social networking sites to gather several thousand protesters to show their displeasure with California voters approving Proposition 8, which rescinded marriage rights for gay couples in that state.

“I’m going to say that I’m proud to be a radical homosexual,” he said.
