Pastors will test Matthew Shepard Act by "inciting hate crimes"
Religious conservatives still outraged over the passing of hate crimes legislation have decided to test the limits of the new law with a publicity stunt involving incendiary hate speech directed at gays and lesbians. In order to "prove" that their God-given right to harass LGBT folk is being threatened, a group of pastors plan to travel to the nation's capital and ratchet up the rhetoric in hopes of getting themselves arrested. (Can you believe this shit? And these zealots have the audacity to refer to hate crimes legislation as the "Hate Christians Law.")

You can't miss the irony here. Christianity is supposed to be all about "Love Thy Neighbor" and "Do Unto Others," right? So in order to challenge the new law, a posse of homobigots led by Pastor Gary Cass (president of the so-called Christian Anti-Defamation Commission) is heading to Washington DC on November 16th where they will assemble outdoors and shout hatred and even foment violence against gays - y'know, to see how far they can go before being arrested under the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

From the creepy World Net Daily: The "Rally for Religious Freedom" in front of the Department of Justice in Washington is intended to force Attorney General Eric Holder either to address the issues or be put in a position of ignoring those who say they are violating the provisions of the federal law, Cass said. "We're basically going to defy the law, and challenge it," Cass told WND. "We're going to declare the whole counsel of God, including those parts that some may consider 'inciting a hate crime' to see if the attorney general is going to come down and arrest a group of peaceful clergy exercising their First Amendment rights."

They want to get arrested so that they can assume the role of martyrs. They'll whine piteously: "See? See? We told you this would happen! Just look how the government tramples our right to agitate against gays and lesbians! See how brave and noble we are when we engage in hate speech! Please, bring us our crosses!"

Don't expect subtlety from this assembly of assholes. They're yearning to be handcuffed. I imagine they'll take a page from Pastor Steve Anderson's playbook and start demanding the execution of homosexuals. (He got away with it and became a sort of insta-celebrtiy, like balloon boy.) They'll do their damndest to out-Phelps the Phelps Clan, they'll try to out-Savage Michael Savage. The spittle will fly.

Still, I don't think D.C. tourists will appreciate hearing anti-gay slogans shouted as they make their way toward the Lincoln Memorial. The police will be standing by, bored expressions on their faces. The local news might make an appearance. I doubt anyone will be arrested during Cass & Company's little hate fest, which will only serve to make the participants look like what they are: a bunch of delusional preachers with way too much time on their hands.

1. Their name for it is actually quite accurate.
They ARE "Hate Christians". Claim to be Christians, full of hate.

I just wish they'd rapture themselves. Perhaps then we could get something good accomplished in this country.

What a shame this isn't Cananda or England. These bastards need to be thrown into jail and whatever is necessary. I am tired of wondering if we go to the store some idiot fundie, egged on by some pastor, decides to shoot up someplace or stalk gays. I don't care about these assholes' rights. What about our right to a peaceful life?

2. correct. this isn't england or canada
the hate crime act did NOT outlaw hate SPEECH

it merely added penalties to already existing crimes, if they were motivated by bias against certain groups, gender, etc.

that is an entirely different thing.

You are a disingenuous, trolling, patronizing, arrogant POS who has posited his ass on DU to play fucking head games with GLBT people here. I believe I have a right to that opinion and will not be manipulated into engaging you in anything remotely resembling an honest discourse because frankly, your overblown ego doesn't need feeding. I will therefore not participate in any further exchanges since they might be misconstrued as any rational, reasonable or even civil attempts to pacify your narcissistic self.

I'd say good day to you but then I really wouldn't mean it. So KISS OFF!!!!!!

14. Should people have the right to yell 'Fire' in a crowded theater?
Should people have the 'free speech' right to conspire to commit a violent crime?

Should people have the right to commit perjury on the witness stand?

Should people have the right to shoot others that they don't like and then claim they were making a statement?

28. I answered your question with several pointed questions
That is not avoidance.

Free speech has limits.

When it does direct damage, then it isn't allowed. The Supreme Court ruled on that long ago and I provided other examples as well.

Not everything a preacher wants to say is okay just because HE thinks he's right.

That's my answer.

79. Repeating your question until you get an answer you like
won't change the answers you got. :eyes:

To answer your question in small words: NO. Pastors, priests and rabbies should not have a right to preach from the bible if it offends people in ways that incites violence.

Yes, I added that part back in about inciting violence. You can choose to ignore that common outcome of hate speech. We won't let you get away with that. Preaching has often been used to incite violence, from supporting lynching and racism, to supporting countless wars over who believes in the right dogma, to whether or not indigenous people throughout the world even have souls.

Preaching continues to often be a tool for inciting violence, and LGBT people are frequent targets.

Your insistence that we have to ignore this is ridiculous, and the fact that you ignore this shows that you lack any credibility on this issue. You came here with an agenda, not an open mind. You came here for the sole reason of supporting religious speech no matter what the outcome, no matter how many dead bodies pile up, by ignoring the bodies and insisting that they aren't there.

Go away. You aren't wanted here.

77. It appears that you aren't smart enough to recognize a very good
answer when it is presented to you. Do you really need it spoon-fed to you in small words?

How many people have to point out that you are an obvious anti-gay troll before you get the hint that you're disingenuous trolling isn't fooling anyone but yourself?

Do you really think you are going to change anyone's mind and convert anyone to your homophobic views with these obvious tactics of yours?

You clearly aren't here to listen or learn. You clearly aren't looking to change your preconceived views about anything. You just expect poor misguided gay people to change our views when exposed to your views. Well, clearly that isn't going to happen, especially when you come into our forum and insult us.

Free speech has it's limits. Now, whether this group of assholes presses those limits will be the real situation. They will likely not be charged with a hate crime, but rather inciting imminent lawless action (a riot or acts of violence). The new HC law simply includes new groups protected, not prohibiting things such as speech.

So, you think someone reciting "And if a man lie with mankind, as with womankind, both of them have committed abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.", then having their followers completing the action should be legal?

35. I have answered and so have others.
You are just being disingenuous. Can they preach? Yes. Can they use their preaching to incite violence? NO! This is not difficult to understand. There is a limit to what is considered free speech, the only ones seemingly having a difficult time understanding this issue are the dumb ass bigot preachers and you.

44. Quit playing the poor misunderstood victim, it is pathetic.
You are changing goalposts and you are doing so in a very dishonest way. Like it or not, there are plenty of people who do not allow for bigotry, even under the guise of religion. You asked, originally, if they should be allowed to preach, and more than one poster has indicated that "yes" they should be allowed to preach, but their are limits. How many times does this have to repeated for you to stop asking the same damn question? Your posts are disingenuous and your questions, I highly doubt, have anything to do with curiosity about the limits of free speech and have more to do with painting the nasty, mean fags trying to beat up on the poor, defenseless religious types, especially Christians.

47. Let me make this very simple for you, as nuance and intelligence seems lost.
Free speech is NOT absolute. I and several other posters have explained that, repeatedly!" You have now exposed yourself. Though I can be tough as nails, sometimes, it is better to play along to get along and let people expose themselves for what they truly are; in your case, it is obvious, you are perpetuating the idea that gays are attacking Christians.

49. And you have received several responses...
...but as I said, nuance and intelligence seems lost on you, thus the need for simplicity.

"Can Christians publicly state their views that homosexual acts are wrong while using the Bible as a source?" Yes.

"Can they do so in public, and can they do so as long as they are not calling for any actions against gays?" Yes and yes.

"Freedom of speech cannot apply to just situations YOU agree with."

This is known as a "strawman." I will say again, since it hasn't seeped into your skull...free speech is NOT absolute!

25. Goodness -
people can preach what every they want - however its illegal to incite a riot/violence period - and that has nothing to do with the hate crimes law. The hate crimes law only covers VIOLENT FELONIES that are punishable by a year or more of prison. Its and added penalty to those that commit a felony.

Unless you can show were "preaching" is a felony your going to have a hard time backing up those right wing talking point of yours.

80. You really are being deliberately dense.
it doesn't matter what the source of the hatred. If it comes from the bible, or a book of fairy tales, or any other book of myth and fiction, if it incites violence it is still a crime.

The source does not grant any immunity. If it did, then that would give them a free pass to incite violence and hurt people upon a whim just because they can quote a book.

Only a fool would support an exemption to the law like that.

61. Inciting violence against any group is evil.
But that's what Christianity is all about these days.

68. Ha!
It is most certainly true. Christianity is a whitewashed tomb full of dead men's bones. Utterly worthless.

But I'm all for the guys preaching in DC. It only shows how contemptible the religion has become.

15. These idiots are clueless about the law
They'll have to actually commit some kind of crime to get charged with a hate crime.

"Incitement" is NOT a criminal act in and of itself.

However, if they directly and specifically instructed someone to commit a crime, they could be charged with conspiracy. THEN the hate crimes law could come into play. But only if it was proven that it was a pure hate crime.

54. The idiots should realize that publicity can backfire, it has in civil rights issues in the past
There's been times before when publicity at civil rights events has hurt one side, such as that protest for african american rights (I forget where) where pictures of white people using stuff like fire hoses and attack dogs on the black protesters to break them up ended up blowing up in the bigots face when the news aired those pictures.

The same can happen here.

65. Interesting, isn't it?
Hate crimes laws have existed for decades. They've protected people on the basis of race/ethnicity, nation of origin, religion and other factors. Not a peep from the RRRW. The Bible says people of other religions should be condemned, even killed, yet the RRRW didn't utter a peep over the hate-crimes legislation that would penalize them if they preached those Bible verses. Not until LGBT people were added to them did the RRRW assholes decide it was a problem. Not until LGBT people were added to them did the RRRW assholes decide they needed to "protest".

Just goes to show you it has nothing to do with "religious beliefs" and everything to do with virulent anti-gay bigotry.

78. He didn't say the New Testament. He said the Bible.
Unless the OT isn't part of the Bible anymore? Now THAT would be interesting.

Hate-crime statutes were first passed by legislatures in the late 1980s and early 1990s in response to studies that indicated an increase in crimes motivated by prejudice. Approximately 30 states and the federal government have some form of hate-crime statute. Many localities have also enacted their own hate-crime ordinances.

If they cross that line of inciting an imminent lawless action, then their asses are busted.

Otherwise their right to preach hate is protected.

90. I wonder if we can sue them for encouraging others to break the law?
With the hate crimes law in effect now, they are encouraging/inciting violence against us. I wonder if any of us are hurt after someone listens to their BS, if we can file civil suits against them. It happens in other crimes where someone gets hurt (and we probably will as a result of their hate speech).
