... which I think was designed intentionally to be so obviously stupid, that followers were supposed to eventually "get the joke" at the end.

14. Scientology was designed by L. Ron Hubbard to prove a point ...

namely, that you could get people to believe anything in the name of religion. It all started with an argument among SF authors/editors about whether or not various "psi" phenomena were real, or whether people believed them regardless of the facts. (John W. Campbell seemed to be particularly credulous on this issue.) Hubbard suggested that people were so gullible on matters of "faith" that he could invent a religion out of thin air and get people to accept it. Hence scientology -- just the kind of religion you might expect a third-rate SF author to invent.

Read all this years ago in a collection of SF stories, but can't remember the author who recounted this. :(
