Oregon group launches drive for same-sex marriage

Gay rights activists on Monday will launch a campaign to persuade Oregonians they should reverse their vote of five years ago and support same-sex marriage.

Basic Rights Oregon, the state's largest gay rights group, aims to put on the Oregon ballot as early as 2012 an initiative asking voters to lift the constitutional ban on gay and lesbian marriage that passed in 2004.

The goal is "to allow same-sex couples to legally marry in this state," said Jeana Frazzini,  executive director of Basic Rights Oregon "There is no substitute for the respect and dignity that comes with marriage."

1. This is good news for Oregon
We have worked hard to shake the ghosts of the Oregon Citizen's Alliance, Lon Mabon and Scott Lively, the people that tried so hard to pass so many bigoted anti-gay measures in this state.

We could use some good news like marriage rights for all.

2. I have a feeling WA's ref 71 is going to help out OR in the long run
Many of the guys trying to reverse Domestic Partnerships in WA are the same that have been in OR. The last poll I saw for Ref 71 was very very good news - as in less than 40% voting to overturn Domestic Partnerships. The Northwest is very very close to becoming the next Northeast in regards to marriage equality. Unfortunately I fear Maine is about to become more like California. Im hoping not but its going to be very close and I know how fear mongering tends to get people to vote for discrimination.
