Edge of Seventeen
Anyone seen this movie? I saw it last night on Logo. I swear I was watching a movie about my younger years. I didn't know movies like this back then.

2. I got a MAJOR '80's flashback from it.
I went to a University with a large Prep-School population, so that whole pink/green Izod LaCoste Polo Shirt thing was in full swing. And here I was, trying to be proto-goth because I'd seen "Decline of the Western Civilization" in my film class that year, working on being different, and certainly not fitting in.

I wish I'd had a guardian angel like Lea DeLaria then...

5. Why, sir, I have no idea what you mean...
What can one get from a movie, anyway? A movie theater, well that's different...

6. I have it on DVD.
Probably my favorite gay movie ever. There aren't alot of really good gay films out there, but this one is on my very small list of good gay movies. Mysterious Skin is another favorite.

Edge of Seventeen and Mysterious Skin are 2 of the few films in the gay genre that don't involve AIDS as a main plot point. Which is very refreshing to see.

It's sort of odd, the gay community is filled with alot of talented people, yet we have some of the most horrid films. I guess the "filmmaking" talent is a rare find in this community.

7. Very good point.
I'd love for plot themes in LGBT films to get away from certain repeated story elements and plot ideas. It isn't just the straight community that pigeonholes us--it's our own filmmakers.

10. Exactly!
It seems that the only interest a gay filmmaker could generate is making "Longtime Companion II" or something. AIDS movies are *boring*. Even "liberal" hollywood has a major problem dealing with gay issues. Who knows why that is.

The best bet I found for gay filmmakers is making movies that don't deal directly with gay issues but include gay characters and gay subplots in their movies. Gus Van Sant has done that very very well with films like "Elefant" and of course "My Own Private Idaho" (which is techinally a gay film but not quite). "Mysterious Skin" is another one that weaves gay characters and issues but doesn't make it a center plot point, but instead has it play a seconday role throughout most of the film.

There's alot of good gay movies coming out or out within the last year, which maybe means we're moving on from the '90s trend of having nothing but AIDS as a plot in gay movies.

Now if we can only get a gay movie that features bears or cubs or SOMETHING other than twinks and muscle guys.
