it passed a subcommittee so it needs to pass the full committee, then the House, and then the Senate. I know that the relevent Senator's (Lieberman and Snowe) are in favor so that is a good sign. I know alot of states started with state employees so it doesn't surprise me that they are starting with them at the federal level.

of all the negativism and hatefulness but when I saw that Harvey Milk was going to be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom I thought I'd share what I thought was good and inspiring news, only to have the same people offer up their usual dishing of shitty, nasty little remarks such as:

"i smell pandering."

"Probably meant to counter the news that the White House has killed anti-DADT efforts in Congress."

"Milk would be rolling in his grave. An award from this administration, after what they've done so far on LGBT issues?"

"Who needs rights? They're giving a dead guy an award!"

"I'm tired of pander bears and I'm sick of chess."

"They are in no position to "honor" him."

"Meaningless gesture. It might warm the hearts of some but does fuck-all for me personally."

So, when I came back to post the good news about Baldwin’s domestic partner bill being passed out of committee, I made the mistake of first looking at the comments to the Harvey Milk post, saw all the hatefulness and said why even bother? Of course, not every gay person on this board is consumed by hate so I thought I'd go ahead and post the link to the Baldwin story anyway but out of frustration I chose an unfortunate title for my post.

Sadly in my view, it's apparent nothing on this board has changed. It's all negative all the time. People are so bitter they can't even take just 5 minutes out of their day to appreciate that Harvey Milk is being honored. Instead, they use the news to to turn what should be something that should put a smile on their face into something to whine and complain about, again.

So why bother posting anything positive here? My mistake, and I won't be doing it again.

PS: And yes, because I refuse to give into the hate I realize to some this makes me a "fanboy/worshiper/Uncle Liza/Aunt Judy/apologist," etc. And that's fine. I've been called those names a hundred times, and I gladly own them, just like when some homophobic pig calls me a "faggot," I gladly own that too.

Interesting that you equate demanding equal rights and protection under the law with hate. Why would you even make such a statement...and here in the GLBT forum? You drive head-on into oncoming traffic with an inflammatory comment that you know will illicit (justifiable) rage, and then stand back from the wreckage shaking your head and reprimanding the individuals injured in the crash.

In my view, the only reason people frequent forums like DU is to express their concern with the direction of our government's policies and advance support for their cause. The fact that we now have a Democrat in the White House and control over both houses only strengthens my resolve to hold their feet to the fire. If we really want a progressive agenda represented in this country we have to remain diligent and avoid complacency. Election day was not the finish line, it was the starting gate.

Engaging in an advanced democracy like ours is messy (you're, no doubt, familiar with the old adage about making laws and sausages) and frustrating. If blowing off some steam is necessary to recharge our batteries and keep us focused on the issues at hand, so be it. I, for one, will not be silenced...not on GLBT issues, universal health care for evey American, abuse of power...the list goes on. Based on the manner in which you pounce on other GLBT DUers, I would venture to guess that you have some deep seeded self hatred over your own gayness. As for "Uncle Liza", if the Halston fits...

Because I've seen certain assumptions allowed to stand for quite some time as long as they served the purpose of smacking LGBT posters around when the internecine minority wars broke out now and then.

The fact of the matter, PT, is that you have rarely to never said one positive, supportive thing of the LGBT posters on this board. I've been around for quite awhile, and I cannot recall you once taking the side of LGBTers on any issue. Where there are threads of great debate, your voice is always firmly on the side of those who dismiss, mock, and belittle our concerns. Your voice is often the one out of dozens chosen to serve as the shield and sword of bigotry and homophobia.

You seem quite happy with that state of affairs. You thrive on them.

Which is quite fine. But you cannot take exception when practically every LGBT poster on the board has noticed it.

And given the massive assumption you allowed to perpetuate that was recently shattered in one of the most unwise threads I've seen in years, you cannot be too irate when every other assumption is questioned quite sharply.

"The syndicate that controls this board." Yes, they're called heterosexuals, and you've entrenched yourself with the powerful because you like being that token contrarian others use as cover for discriminatory views. It makes you feel special, liked, valued.

Well, in history, that individual is always discarded once they're no longer convenient. I know enough of the world to know certain bigots would like me a great deal if I just had a bad word or two about those mouthy queers. But my dignity and self-respect would never allow for that kind of shallow, disposable approval.

Notice how a nice chorus of voices are now glaringly missing once a certain assumption was accidentally allowed to drop. That should tell you exactly the purpose your contrarianism has served.

That includes when it comes from a member of the gay community. You can rant and rave about haters and shoulder sitting by overly large chips till you're breathless. It only serves to expose your thinly veiled attempts at torpedoing important debate on gay issues.

It is true that I made an assumption (actually, more of an educated guess) regarding the state of your self acceptance. Seems reasonable enough considering the tenor of your posts.
