Even as political turmoil continues in New York, the executive of one of the state’s counties has come out in favor of marriage equality for gay and lesbian families--and been rebuked by a New York bishop for having done so.
A June 20 Newsday article reported that the executive of Nassau County, Tom Suozzi, who had previously opposed marriage equality (while supporting civil unions), publicly declared a change of heart on the issue with a June 12 op-ed piece in The New York Times www.nytimes.com/2009/06/13/opinion/13suozzi.html?_r=1

Suozzi’s change of heart, and his principled public stand on behalf of gay and lesbian families, was decried by New York bishop William Murphy, who rejected the conclusion to which Suozzi’s conscience had led him.
In a June 15 article carried by a publication affiliated with the Rocville Centre Diocese, Bishop Murphy took issue with Suozzi for "contradicting some basic moral teachings of his own faith."
Bishop Murphy denied that two persons of the same gender could enjoy a marriage, assuming in his argument that marriage could only be genuine if bestowed upon persons of mixed gender.

It is well known that Bishop Murphy is a horse's ass. More evidence to that effect.
