http://blogs.wweek.com/news/2009/06/22/the-sam-adams-report-highlights/Few people expected he would face criminal charges in this he said/he said fiasco. Already today there is major debate over the $750 in cash Sam loaned Beau at the end of last year and then just before this story broke. Sam is in foreclosure on two rental properties because he has not paid his mortgages since February.
http://blogs.wweek.com/news/2009/06/17/sam-adams-property-problems-clarified/ Sam and Beau were not in regular contact at that time, according to BOTH of them. To say the very least, this certainly looks odd. With his salary and rental income as well, pleading poverty because of legal fees just doesn't add up. There is much more that has not yet surfaced and will in the next weeks.
He may not have committed crimes, he may not have lied in campaign materials, but he did lie to the Portland community during the election when he completely destroyed an also gay opponent by accusing him of a homophobic attack. This opponent DID NOT go to the press with the story, he met with people close to Sam to get advice on what to do after Beau approached him, Sam is the one who went to the press when he was contacted by these people and he lied and lied and lied again.
This is not a gay issue for the vast majority of people who want him recalled. Other than Sam's direct staff, I know of no one in any City Bureau who wants him to remain Mayor. Obviously I do not know everyone, surely he has supporters, but the reality is that before this story hit, he had already played his hand and shown a completely power hungry agenda. An agenda that disrupted months of planning within bureaus that could have been avoided had he been up front about his plans for reorganization. He won the election in May '08, did not take office until Jan. '09, he had 7 months to communicate with the Bureaus he has disrupted completely unnecessarily. The City employees are angry. The City is angry. He has no credibility and cannot be trusted to keep his word.
I am not without empathy for his situation, but this man is responsible for this situation. He has repeatedly shown poor judgment both in his personal and professional life. No schools want him anywhere on the premises, any comments he makes about helping kids will forever be turned into a bad joke. I do not see how he can live this down and regain the respect of this City. He needs to be recalled and I believe he will be.
