In honor of both Gay pride and Juneteenth
we should honor GLBT people of color who lived in the shadows of both homophobia and racism during the fifties and sixties and earlier.

Bayard Rustin
James Baldwin
Langston Hughes
Barbara Jordan
Zora Neale Hurston
Billy Strayhorn
Lorraine Hansbury
Ma Rainey
Bessie Smith
Ethel Waters
Samuel R. Delany

and many, many others.

Feel free to add your own. It's important that we honor and claim them, so that they can be remembered for who they actually were, their entire legacy, not just whitewashed by heterosexism in the history books.

12. A kick and...
...also a reminder that people of colour in some parts of the world are still living with both racism and homophobia in todays society.

My wife-to-be is a full blooded Aboriginal woman, and not only does she face the usual small country town racism for being black, but also the homophobia we face together for daring to be an openly gay couple.

My partner is a very talented but retired stage and screen actress who is known in these parts, but the only reason she got the jobs she got was because of her looks. She is a stunning looking woman who has been told she doesn't have the traditional look of an Aboriginal woman, but rather a more exotic look. And as a white person in this country, hearing that rubbed me the wrong way. Especially after knowing what white Australia has done to her people in the past.
