I think I figured it out ,
Edited on Sat May-16-09 10:03 PM by UndertheOcean
Democrats think of the GLBT community as guaranteed votes . Because whatever they offer the other side is worse. So I won't expect more than promises from them.

So what is the solution ? , abstaining from voting can be dangerous. I think there is no solution , until the center in this country becomes more tolerant .

Maybe within a few generations things will be better.

1. Yes, the attitude has been "where else are you going to go?"
They know that if they abuse the hell out of us the other party will still treat us worse.

They think this is permission to treat us badly, as long as they treat us slightly better than the other party.

11. it's the taking us for granted thing that's so demeaning
but truth is we're participating in it too. We have to start demanding promises to trade for votes. Not implied promises, not lip service not "trust me, I'm on your side" bullshit.

We didn't - we suck at being tough when the chips are down in politics. Joe Solmonese fighting for marriage equality by bleating how unfair it is that we can't get married, is not the good fight.

Fuck it, we're Americans, and they better god damn well give us our American rights, or we will take them, with prejudice, just like any other American would.

Steal our votes again? That is why Feingold and Hackett were the better candidates. They had absolute moral clarity on the issues of American civil rights and brooked no discussion.

The fact that Obama can't seem to find that clarity himself as a leader means he doesn't really believe it. That's the hard cruel fact.

2. You figured out their game
Of course they think no matter how badly they treat us, how many times they shit all over us, we'll keep forking over our money/votes/support. "Where else are you going to go---whaddaya gonna do, vote Republican? "

They're not going to change unless they're forced to. We have the choice. We can keep taking it up the backside without lube or a thank-you, or we can actually do something about it.....

3. Democrats think the entire Democratic wing of the party is guaranteed votes
because we have no where else to go. We need to fight like crazy for anti-DLC candidates in the primaries and stop givinig money or voluteering time to DLCers in general elections. Traditionally, it is the left wing that is the most active - perhaps they'll pay atttention when they can't find anyone to door knock or make calls. What you do in the voting booth is your business.

7. Too many of the Democrats who are in control now
are the Republicans who used to be considered moderate. We either need to wrestle the Democratic party back from them or start a new one.

4. "What's the Matter with Kansas"
Democrat-style.

I think there are solutions--one would be for the progressives and LGBT community to leave the Democrats together. The Democrats have shifted so far to the right that they're practically the Republican Party of the 1980s. Meanwhile, the Republicans are more than in decline--they're completely Whigged. They'll fade out in another decade.

8. What solution there is rests at the state and local levels
with the Democrats that need, really need, our votes, over and over again. The national Party is right wing and worthless. Tim Kaine is an opponent of my family's basic human rights, he's not going to hear anything we say to him. However, local and state races are won by handfuls of votes, by slim margins, with money they raised the hard way.
There is never a national Democrat that I really like, because they have to run to the right, to please the conservative old folks until they die off. But they are a vanishing breed.
On the local and State levels however, messages can be sent that are heard. Sometimes.

10. Here's a Solution
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=221x131236

We start voting FOR our own self-interests instead of against them, and we invite the rest of the Democrats to do the same. If they choose not to, it is THEIR failure, not ours.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I will never be party to another Obama. We have wasted too much time supporting the status quo. It is time to MAKE change instead of listening to people TALK about it.
