Spain's PM Tells Catholic Church To Keep Out Of Gay Marriage Debate

The Roman Catholic Church has called on the Spanish king to refuse to sign legislation allowing same-sex marriage.

The bill has passed Spain's lower house and is now before the Senate. (story) It is expected to be passed this summer.

The Conferencia Espiscopal, the Spanish Bishops' Organization, tells the El Mundo newspaper that they wrote to King Juan Carlos last Friday calling on him to issue a clear and incisive statement opposing the legislation.

it's interesting that the Catholic Church is taking a similar stand on gay rights that Franco did while his regime was in power

just something to think about

1. Not really
From what I've read, the founder of Opus Dei was a friend of Franco's, and the Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Sodano was a very good friend of Augusto Pinochet.

So it's really not that much of a surprise that the Catholic church
is continuing it's stand against gay rights.

Funny how the Catholic Church seems to like supporting facist or ultra right governments, as is seen by it's history in Latin America,
and Spain.

Perhaps it's a good thing that here in the US, the Catholic church has some who are progressive, but how long will it last? There will
come a day when the Vatican will try to demand total obedience from
American Catholics, what will happen then? What choices will have to
be made?

Let's hope for the sake of American Catholics that it doesn't happen!

2. Europe has a different attitude towards the catholic church
after centuries of religious wars, burning and hanging a million so-called "witches", an inquisition, the crusades, and generations of hatred over transubstantation versus consubstantiation, they really don't like the church meddling in government any more.

The catholic church is fucking up so badly right now. If it wants to bring new catholics into the fold and if it wants to be a contender and relevant, it has to address the world in a way that provides welcome and hope to people, not fear and loathing.

The only places fundie catholicism appeals to these days are third world countries where fundamentalism is a natural reaction to rapid social change, and quite frankly, the catholic church of Nigeria is not a role model for any modern system of faith.

3. it was also the catholic church's participation in repressing
workers rights.

the catholic church much more recently opposed things like unions and workers rights as people were fighting for a better quality of living.
