How do you plan to capitalize on the Democratic majority in Congress?
Edited on Fri Jan-09-09 01:43 AM by JackBeck
Remember when we used to have co-equal branches of government? We should never forget that the political undermining of the LGBT community started way before Bush's press conference introducing an amendment to the Constitution banning gay marriage.

We now have the biggest Congressional majority we've seen since Gingrich convinced Americans that Republicans had the permission to take a contract out on them. And look at the mess they left us. The conservative movement failed big time. Of course we knew it would fail...we told them it was misguided...but now is the time to pick-up the pieces and move on.

The 8 years are over. There was no way any effort that we made would result in change.

But we do have another opportunity to lobby on both a local, state and federal level for our civil rights equality.

What are your goals and objectives over the next four years?

And it's OK if you haven't figured out a plan. Please ask if you don't know what to do in your community. It's OK. Many of us are here to help and offer guidance.

1. Or you could just lurk DU waiting for someone to post something you think is bigoted.
The loudest voices on here should spend some time directing their outrage at the ones that can actually facilitate change.

2. Great post.
It is an upward battle here, hell the new dem congress critter voted against the equal pay legislation just last week. Ain't that a kick in the pants.

I figure that the only way my state will evolve is the way it did after the desegregation laws were passed, kicking and screaming into the present.

Kick & recommended

thank you

3. Not sure honestly
Living in pinkoville I feel relatively safe and secure (even happy).

Lobby the executive? Lobby other states' congress people? Other districts' reps if need be?

what is the most effective national glbt organization?

i'm just curious if anyone is actively taking the helm on the federal level

are there any current legal cases that show signs of advancing to the supreme court?

it seems we need something solid & high profile to collectively back

organization is key to any victory & i'm always afraid that too many pots on too many burners with too many cooks leads to more & more chaos

i think we all want to be assured that the organizations we choose support (financially & otherwise) are actively working to achieve positive ends

right now i'm not getting that feeling form hrc - i'm not interested in their appearance on "the l word"

we're not going to get a single thing out of congress or obama till we have a single thing to present to them
