Federal Court Supports Ex-Gays & Halts Sex Ed Course
http://www.365gay.com/newscon05/05/050505sexEd.htm

A federal judge Thursday issued a restraining order blocking Montgomery County public schools from instituting a new health curriculum that seeks to provide positive information for LGBT students.

Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays filed suit earlier this week, accusing the school district of "denigrating" so-called former gays in the materials to be used in the course. (story)

The suit accused the school board of "an irrational phobia of the ex-gay community,” and "urges censorship of ex-gay materials in our schools."

1. But the main body of their complaint
had nothing to do with gays. They were mostly angry that the curriculum didn't teach abstinence only. They just used us to further their fucking agenda once again.

5. By giving the reasons why one should wait to have sex
I could take at least a half hour. Certainly I could have taken the 6 minutes that were devoted to condom use.

7. No I don't
but I do think there is something wrong with a video that devotes a half minute to abstinence. Many children can be convinced to refrain from sex but not in a half minute. Given the number of my students who are parents I wish that someone had devoted some amount of time to both convincing them to not have sex until they were older and failing that using protection.

8. It doesn't seem to matter
how long you spend on it, kids are going to have sex anyway. Every study I've ever seen shows that abstinence only sex ed only results in kids who have sex without protection. Not exactly something we want to encourage.

I have no problem with sex ed classes that stress abstinence, as long as they provide accurate information about all types of birth control, how to use it, and where to get it. I do have a problem when they don't provide any information about birth control at all, or when they provide blatantly false information about it.

9. Please point out where I ask for or defend abstinence only
I don't. What I do ask for is that some reasonable amount of time be devoted to abstinance as well as to condom usage.

10. Yeah, and I have no problem with that.
But seriously, how often can you say "don't have sex" before kids just stop listening to you? Maybe a half a minute isn't enough, but I know my sex ed class managed to get the message across that sex isn't a good idea and that it's the only 100% sure way to not get pregnant or STDs without spending a huge amount of time on it. Certainly less than half an hour.

11. half an hour might be an exaggeration
but I can think of ten good reasons right off the bat.

Someone call Tom Delay and tell him there's another judge that needs to be put in Tom's sights.

There goes the last refuge for Clinton apologists who say we should support Republican-lite candidates on the Democratic side for their judicial appointments.
