Where is our anger?

This video was made over two years ago — it’s a clip from In the Life; Harvey Fierstein recounts the events following Harvey Milk’s assassination and Matthew Shepard’s murder. He then speaks frankly to the GLBTQI community about the recent history of our self-proclaimed “friends,” i.e., Democrats like Bill Clinton and John Kerry, spitting on us in exchange for political compromise. Two years later, in spite of Fierstein’s alarm sounding, it’s happening again with President-elect Obama.

At the end of the clip, Harvey issues a dire warning which, it turns out, was tragically foretelling. Harvey tried to ignite our anger two years ago; yet we as a community failed to heed that warning. Now, after the November 4, 2008 election, his question is even more imperative: Where is our anger?

My brothers and sisters, I’m not usually an alarmist but I feel that someone needs to say this:

If they can so easily pass laws to ban us from marriage, none of our rights can be taken for granted. If community standards is reason enough to legislate anti-gay discrimination, the backslide of our freedom has just begun.
…
I beg you to take a long, hard look at the election results from around the country; get in touch with your anger and put it to work. If we do not, I promise our community will be attacked by the fascist Right in the name of decency and family values with unprecedented vigor.

Better to find your anger now than wait for the next election and ask, “Where are my rights?”
