Did The Obama Cabinet Pick Push For Gay High School & Is It A Good Idea?
I think Cenk really nailed it in this clip regarding .

It does seem like a good pick on Obama's part. As to the specific question on Pride Campuses, I'm not sure how I feel. On the one hand I think the idea of a safe heaven is great! On the other hand others have suggested that it reminds them of segregation and Cenk's point about an ideal world is dead on.

1. I dont know that I would call protecting students segregation
The schools are promoted as a way for GLBT students who abused in public schools or for no fault of their own require a safe space. I would not call that segregation - it is not forced on the students. It would be great if they were not needed because all students were granted dignity and respect - but as most are aware we cant even get that from our elected officials yet alone our fellow citizens.

That's why we need to have these discussions.

4. I think the purpose of those school is very misunderstood
they aren't simply for gay people but for gay people who are on the verge of dropping out. These are gay kids who are homeless due to be thrown out of their homes or so abused at school that they can't bear showing up to school. This isn't your typical, well adjusted gay kid.

5. Sadly the social conservatives won't be understanding on that count.
They'll just hear "gay" and their heads will explode as usual.

6. I forgot to add
It seems like most people are completely unaware of these things you mention here. Do you agree OR do you think most people know but don't care?

7. I think it is mostly lack of awareness on the part of the well meaning objectors
This isn't a school to keep gays out of other schools but a school to keep very troubled gays in a school of last resort. I think for that reason the schools should stay.

8. And the real problem here
is the number of administrators and educators that allow cultures of bullying, harrassment and violence to persist.

9. Not to mention, republican governors
Despicably, Ahnold vetoed a bill here in California intended to increase protections for GLBTQI students from bullying, harassment and, as in the case of 15 y.o. Lawrence King, murder in public schools.

Ahnold VETOED this bill.
