Advice needed on school punishment...
Imagine that your 1st grade class is outside playing during recess. They are spread out in a playground the size of a football field. Now you come outside to retrieve your class and blow your
whistle to get their attention to line up. Five children however are very engrossed in their play and don't hear the sound of your whistle. When you do finally get their attention they willing come to line up but by now you are really pissed off? The class is scheduled to watch a movie and have milk and cookies as a treat. As punishment for the children who didn't hear the whistle, you decide to put them all in the hallway so they will miss the movie (which is over an hour long)and treats.
Sound fair?

2. First of all, why aren't you outside WITH the kids??
Secondly, what schools allow kids to watch movies these days?

Thirdly, in a hallway without adult supervision?

Sorry I can't relate to any part of this scenario.

3. Absolutely not fair. If this happened to your child call the
principal. No 1st grade teacher should leave children untended in a hallway to begin with.

6. There are teachers outside during recess but typically one or two
teachers are watching 4 or more classes.

9. Well there's a lawsuit waiting to happen.
I've taught elementary school for 31 years. None of the teachers I know stay inside while their class is at recess. There's liability issues all over that plan. I also am not aware of any school that shows movies to kids other than on very special occasions, like holidays. And the putting kids in the hall plan is not happening either.

10. I wrote the teacher and she said the movie is actually only
ten minutes long but it is accompanied by educational activities. I asked her to provide me with the
name of the person who was supervising my son but apparently that's going to be a little difficult for her so once again I wrote:

How long in total was my son in the hallway and once again, who was supervising him? You write that this movie " goes with a name activity as well as a math activity" so are you telling me that my son missed out on these educational activities because he "unintentionally" did not hear your call to line up? Please explain.

Awaiting her response.

18. in every elementary school I or my children attended
teachers always "rotated" so that all teachers were never outside. Each teacher would get a "break" from playground duty.

(And that's a lot of schools in let's see - six states)

13. At that age - ears are deaf to whistles.......

14. If that is their teacher's signal, they had better be learning it
I don't have a problem with consequences for not lining up when they were told to line up. I do have a problem with the lack of supervision however.

15. Me too
I have a hard time believing a teacher would deny kids a learning lesson as a consequence...

No food or water for 3 days seems more effective :;):

16. Depends on whether its the same group of kids and if this has happened repeatedly.
First offense? No, its not a functional response.

17. In 27 years, I've never had students that didn't hear my whistle.
If they can't hear it, I'm too far away.

Who gets "really pissed off" at first graders for being focused on their play at recess?

Consequences for misbehavior are based on the behavior; not on temper. If it took an extra 2 minutes to round them up, and I thought they needed a consequence, I'd hold them for 2 minutes of their next recess.

In this case, though, I'd just move further onto the field before blowing my whistle next time.

Why?
