Yesterday he said his district is one of the worst in the nation and the diplomas aren't worth the paper they are written on.
KANSAS CITY, Mo.-A day after John Covington called the Kansas City Missouri school district's level of education criminal and said the diplomas weren't worth their paper, he sat down for a one-on-one interview with NBC Action News.
Covington made the statements while speaking at UMKC Monday morning.
"This is one of the worst districts in the nation and the reason is when we get to the point when we have to make serious decisions, we always make those decisions in ways that are best for adults rather than what is best for children," says Covington. "That has to stop."
Covington defended those statements Tuesday morning.
"Kansas City citizens are going to have to, at some point, see the elephant in the room," said Covington. "And recognize what we are providing the children is egregiously unacceptable. Until we can recognize that, we cannot move forward."
Covington made the statements amid controversy of his proposed plan to close half of the district's schools to avoid bankruptcy. He says both the bold statements and the closures are vital to fix the troubled district.
