Can I Get Some Help?
Hey everyone, I love coming and watching you guys talk on the Education forum (and occasionally participating myself). I was wondering if any of you could possibly help me. This December, I'm going to India to give a speech on the American education system. I'm a Language Arts Teaching Major and I was wondering if you could give me some of your opinions on what the most important thing to communicate to the rest of the world is, regarding our education system, specifically high school. So if you've got something you would like people in India to know, please feel free to put your thoughts down here!

Thanks a lot!

1. Before you go please see PBS The Story of India
it is in reruns or your library might have a copy.

You can always buy a set.

Living in Asia I thought that I was well informed about Indian history having done a lot of reading about King Asoke.

This series was astonishingly well prepared and may be the best historical piece ever to be put on TV.

One major thing I learned - that the people who lived in Pakistan and India didn't really identify themselves as being either Muslim or Hindu but identified more by their village. Some weeks they would go to the Mosque and some times the Hindu temple.

What changed?

The British Colonial administration decided that a census was required and that by asking people to identify their religion to the government they started to identify more with their religous community and less with their villages.

2. Nice!
Thanks, I'll take a look at that before I leave. I'm trying to include a bunch of stuff that may be interesting to Indians, either because its so different from India or because its similar, therefore relatable. The professor who I'm taking the trip with is Indian, too, so I've been picking his brain quite a bit. Not to mention, I've done a lot of reading on India already.
