I Figured It Was time For A Hell-Raising Post
Posted this in GD:

The increased militarization of public schools is the thrust of my post.

" Military-backed public schools on the rise in US
By DORIE TURNER

ATLANTA (AP) — The U.S. Marine Corps is wooing public school districts across the country, expanding a network of military academies that has grown steadily despite criticism that it's a recruiting ploy.
The Marines are talking with at least six districts — including in suburban Atlanta, New Orleans and Las Vegas — about opening schools where every student wears a uniform, participates in Junior ROTC and takes military classes, said Bill McHenry, who runs the Junior ROTC program for the Marines.
Those schools would be on top of more than a dozen public military academies that have already opened nationwide, a trend that's picking up speed as the U.S. Department of Defense looks for ways to increase the number of units in Junior ROTC, which stands for Reserve Officers Training Corps. "

And this little goody too. I notice Arne Duncan's name is conveniently left out.

" Chicago has six public military academies and is the only district with schools representing all four branches of the military. . "

We don't need this, period.

A few links on Arne and militarizing public schools:

Duncan expanded the militarization of the public schools in Chicago, the city with the most militarized school system in the nation. Thousands of students are enrolled in Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps programs and numerous military high schools are in operation. Rather than focus on education, military schools essentially prepare students to become cannon fodder for the U.S. war machine.

(*THis little gem isn't very funny.)
"Emmanuel said that he fully supported the expansion of the military programs in Chicago's public schools. He also joked that an extra $500,000 in federal funds that he brought to Chicago for the Marine Military Academy came from an "earmark" that was supported by Republicans."

"Editor's Note: Newly confirmed Secretary of Education Arne Duncan left a legacy of education reform in Chicago public schools that favored military program JROTC and privatization initiatives, reports writer Andy Kroll. A longer version of this piece originally appeared in TomDispatch.com

Oh well, it isn't like there's anything I can do about it.

1. My uncle is a staunch Democrat and a veteran of three wars.
He was truant and behavior problem in his youth. He was one of those guys who was sent to the Army to "straighten yourself out". It served him well. He graduated from college, was a pilot, and went on to a successful civilian career in something completely different than anything he had done in the military.

4. This, along with NCLB, is more evidence that public schools are increasingly viewed...
...as hunting grounds for future cannon-fodder candidates.
