The War on Drugs is a War on the Poor
I'm sure most of you all have read Michelle Alexander's book, "The New Jim Crow." As Alexander clearly documents, the War on Drugs has served primarily as means to disenfranchise large swathes of the poorest among us. I was so inspired by Alexander's work that I decided to write a song about this ugly phenomenon. It is entitled "The Way it is." If you have time, please check it out. I've been performing it around Lexington, KY, and people have mostly reacted positively to its message.

Thank You,

4. Way more so
How many people have been murdered because of those wars compared to the War on Drugs?

6. Our NAACP branch just donated this book to our library
I met the President of CA's NAACP who is now on the 'End the War on Drugs' message and just became a Board member of LEAP.

7. "Jim Crow" is appropriate.
The war on drugs is a race-class war with the rules skewed to favor rich white men.

There is currently a far more severe sentences for low-level offenses involving crack cocaine than powder cocaine, even though crack is less dangerous and addictive. You can get five to life for having 5 grams of crack, but with 500 grams of powder you can only get up to 5 years.

Why are alcohol and tobacco legal, and marijuana not? Because alcohol and to tobacco were traditionally the "luxuries" of the wealthy.
