South Dakota - Talk $$$
Good idea from a diary at Kos

If you are as disgusted with the recent South Dakota anti-abortion legislation as I am, there are things you can do. Sure you can write the Governor's office, but I think you will have far more effect if you contact the Office of Economic Development. You see - South Dakota has been losing people, jobs, and entire communities for most of the past 60 years. They are hurting.

Although this map shows recent population loss - it misses two things. It doesn't cover population loss between 1940 and 1970 when nearly every county in the state lost considerable population - plus it doesn't indicate population losses greater than 5%. Since WWII, more than half the counties in South Dakota have lost 50% of their population.

So hit them where it counts.
Contact South Dakota Economic Development.

Mary Lehecka Nelson
(605) 773-3301
mary.leheckanelson@state.sd.us

Here are 4 things you can do:

1. Make it clear that your personal travel and vacation plans will not include South Dakota. There are other Interstates in North Dakota and Nebraska. There are other places to gamble besides Deadwood. There are other mountains to visit besides the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore.

2. If you own your own business, tell SDED that you would not consider relocating or expanding operations in South Dakota. Let the people at Economic Development understand that women's reproductive rights are part of economic development.

3. If you work for a company that provides a full range of reproductive health benefits, let SDED know that it would be difficult for a company such as yours to locate in South Dakota. Also, let them know that in the competition for top employees, you could not consider working in South Dakota.

4. Better yet, try to get your company to issue a statement on reproductive rights' benefits. It can be very neutral in tone. "XYZ Corp. could not locate in any state which did not offer a full range of health protections" would be a powerful reminder to SDED.

Make sure that state officials in South Dakota know the real cost of their proposed abortion legislation. It's sad that these ideologues have no concern for women's health, but they may think twice before plunging their state into further economic decline.

1. Biker boycott of Sturgis would be incredible.
It's been suggested in several other DU threads and that would wallop their pocketbooks pretty hard. Don't know how realistic it is, but I love the idea.

My family will NOT be visiting Mt. Rushmore as long as this law exists and we will fly-over SD to get anywhere further west.

As another steeler fan and a biker for 50 years I can tell you that if even 10% of us would not go they would notice. Bikers are not nearly as anti-choice as you might think.

N.Calif is alive with bikers every summer for some sort of happening and they all seem to have a fine time. Sturgis isn't the only game in town.

14. Protect Bear Butte
If you needed another reason.....
Bear Butte is "Nowah'wus" to the Cheyenne Nation. It is "Mato Paha" to the Lakota.

This is a "Call" to all Indian people. For two centuries our people have struggled to preserve and defend our sacred mountain, Bear Butte. It seems like every year some Indian group or Tribe is protesting, or going to court, or appealing to the Governor, to protect Bear Butte from some new destruction and desecration. Each year sees Indian people attempting to use every available avenue to prevent the further destruction of Bear Butte and its surrounding lands. Today our sacred mountain is threatened as never before, immense venues of drunken revelry are being carved into the land around her slopes and the worlds biggest "Biker Rally" will bring almost a million loud, polluting motorcycles and their thrill seeking riders, to the sacred mountain. They seem eager to dirty and disrespect our sacred lands in search of an escape from an empty American life.

At first they came into our sacred grounds as trappers killing animals for their pelts, we fought them then and drove them away. Then more invaders were sent under Custer to dig for gold and take the land from our forefathers. Soon they were too many to resist and the Chiefs had to make treaties with them in order to protect the people's lives and our lands. Always they have been told: "The Black Hills are sacred and Bear Butte is sacred also" and it was included in the treaties as land that would belong to the People forever, never to be sold. Our ancestors clearly explained to the Americans that our sacred lands must remain within the care of the people and the Americans agreed, their Congress ratified it and their President signed it. It is only because the Americans have broken their own Treaty(s) with our Nations that today we must continue the struggle our forefathers began.

Recently the announcement of a 600-acre "Biker Bar/Campgrounds" and a giant, man-made amphitheater and concert venue next to Bear Butte alarmed Indian tribes all across the Great Plains. Even more insulting was the promoters plan to name it "Sacred Ground" and construct a giant statue of an "Indian" facing Bear Butte! Indian people began once more to rally to protect the mountain from this development. Several Tribes passed resolutions and once more groups and individual people began attending meetings and trying to persuade the County and State governments to prohibit this development. That part of the struggle goes on and we are still attending meetings and filing our arguments against the development and against granting it a liquor license. We fully intend to continue to use these bureaucratic remedies in hope that we can establish some legal zoning and stop any development that way.

At the same time it has become more and more obvious that the immense amount of money Meade County and the State of South Dakota make off the "Sturgis Bike Rally" means that once again our pleas will fall on deaf ears. As we began exploring ways to stop the "Sacred Grounds" developer we found out that he is far from alone in his intentions to develop biker bars and concert venues on grounds surrounding Bear Butte. We now know of at least a half a dozen major campgrounds and concert venues being planned and at least one under construction. These, in addition to some smaller ones already in existence that are getting ready to expand and a giant one called "Buffalo Chip" that is approximately four miles away, mean that soon our sacred mountain will be surrounded by noise and drunken partying. Mega speaker systems, giant TV screens, fireworks and 800,000 roaring motorcycles will drive Animals, Indians and Spirits away from the mountain. They will destroy the land and dirty the water. Already her lake is drying and the water from her spring barely flows.

"Owe Aku" a traditional group working on the Oglala reservation at Pine Ridge has been given the task of preparing the "Sacred Staff" and taking it to the Tribes. "Owe Aku" means "bring back the way" in Lakota and in this beginning they are the contact point and fiscal agent for fund raising. As a 501 c-3 organization, Owe Aku is able to receive tax exempt donations from individuals and Tribes and to be accountable for using it for the encampment and Council. A larger meeting of all concerned is planned for early spring, at that time a more formal organization can be formed to be more inclusive and to make the decisions necessary for the Gathering. If you or your society wishes to join with us in defending Bear Butte this summer feel free to contact us.

2. I agree with you I think that hitting them in the wallet
is the only way they will wake up.

I suggested this the other day and no one responded to it..

If they are forcing women who are victims of crime to carry out these births, then the victim should get every name of the state politicians that voted for this insane piece of state legislation and file for child support from them...and/or they should sue the state for support.

Make the individuals and state pay for the childs expenses and even college. Also they need to pay to keep the roof over their heads and medical expenses.

The state will soon see that it cannot survive fiscally.

Also, for other states that take in the victims that you mentioned they should bill S Dakota for any expense incurred to take care of victim and the child.

WE have to stop playing nice with these people...they started the fight let's take them on....They only understand money....so lets talk about money!!

Your thoughts?

4. I like that idea
Anyone who is a victim of the crime of rape who becomes pregnant should have the state pay for all expenses, and all those bozos in the legislature should be forced to personally pay child support.

8. I plan to write a letter to everyone who voted for this law in SD
And demand that they create a bill that does the following:

Free contraception readily available to all women with full and accurate information about failure rates and how to use it.

Free pre-natal care to any woman who would otherwise abort.

Free pediatric care to every child up to the 18th anniversary of the child's birth, including special ed for those who have birth defects or mental retardation. Gifted child programs for the geniuses. All children, and it must be FREE.

Free diapers for any infant from labor to 12 months later.

These benefits must be advertised with the zeal of a political candidate running for office AND these benefits must be easily available with a minimum of paperwork and a minimum of inconvenience to the end user.

If a woman dies in childbirth, the State of SD will be liable for the value of the woman's earnings (if employed outside the home) or the value of hiring out her homemaking duties (which can cost upwards of 100k per year). If she dies, the State better hope she's employed by Wal-Mart instead of being a stay-at-home mom.

Surrogate motherhood will be researched and given annual grants, so that it becomes safe for all parties to transplant fetuses, embryos, etc into another woman. The surrogate mother will be drawn by lottery from the ranks of any female citizen who has given money or time to anti-abortion causes. For each $100 donation, her name goes in once. This includes all female legislators who voted for the bill to ban abortions and it is worth 50 chances. Furthermore, she will have her name put in another time for each instance of harassing patients at the one abortion clinic in SD. If she's traveled to another state to harass patients, each instance is worth 5 more instances of her name being placed in the lottery. If she is already pregnant, her name will be placed on a waiting list and once she's given birth she will be the next recipient. The purpose of this is to reduce the trauma for rape and incest victims and protect the lives of the women with pregnancies they would otherwise abort.

Will this cost money? Of course it will! A lot of money! But since we want to prevent abortions, let's not be hypocritical and do it the right way. After all, the person who wrote the bill banning abortions specifically mentioned economic reasons as why women abort.

Voting age, drinking age, driving age, any other age-dependant laws will be pushed back 9 months - counting from the due date, so 17+3 month olds can legally vote and buy cigarettes, 20+3months can legally visit bars and get drunk, 15+3 months can legally drive on the open road.

In a separate bill, the penalties for rape and incest will be increased with no parole possible, and the "She's a slut" defense can't be used.

Is this too hard for SD to swing? Then repeal the law banning abortions.

Once I have more time, I can edit this down some. Perhaps I'll write several letters, each focusing on a different topic. This ban pisses me off more than I can say.

5. I left S.D. in 1950
"Although this map shows recent population loss - it misses two things. Since WWII, more than half the counties in South Dakota have lost 50% of their population."

My wife and I both had low paying jobs, but they were above S.D. average in 1950. We both quit them and left for California in 1950. We never looked back, however we do go back to our home towns quite often to visit our relatives. California was very good for us. Two of my friends who had just returned from a job hunt in California in 1950 told me it was a waste of time to go out there because they had no luck at getting a job. Their story worried me at first, but I soon realized that I probably wouldn't hire them either. I suspect that because of religion, education and parental viewpoints many are locked into staying put. Typically only the progressives can move on.

When very young I thought abortions were bad. However as I grew and saw so many lives destroyed over the normal human hormonal drive to have sex and the subsequent outcast treatment of those who could not resist plus the unwanted children. I became convinced that abstinence is a religious fantasy.

I posted them at:

But they might get lost in that discussion.

We should also make up list of companies that are either based in SD or have significant presences there, and write them telling them you will boycott their products until they put pressure on the state legislature to uphold women's rights.

South Dakota Chambers of Commerce:
http://www.globalindex.com/comindex/sd/index.shtml

Also, e-mail Billie Jo Waara, director of tourism, at sdinfo@state.sd.us .

And the link below will take you to a page that conveniently provides a form and e-mail connections for every South Dakota state legislator. I have gotten very interesting responses back from two legislators who have been quoted as supporters of the bill:
http://legis.state.sd.us/email/index.aspx?FuseAction=Member

And, lets write some letters to the Editor of South Dakota papers to let the general population know as well. The politicians might not tell them how many calls and letters they are getting.

You can find the contact info and/or write them directly from here:
http://www.congress.org/congressorg/dbq/media /

With all of us here and at Kos, if we can get this on more sympathetic blogs, forums, YahooGroups, etc. we might give some folks a second thought. I am doing what I can as well as sending to NARL and Planned Parenthood and prochoice.org

10. The Iams Company
Since The Iams Company purchased private label canned pet food manufacturer, Heartland Quality Foods, in May 1991, the canned pet food plant has grown into one of the most important manufacturing operations for the company. The Iams Heartland plant, located in North Sioux City, South Dakota, produces 100 percent of the canned products the company distributes worldwide, manufacturing more than 288 million cans of pet food each year. At the time of the acquisition, Heartland Quality Foods employed 66 people, but now employs more than 200 people, with more than 95 percent hired locally. The Iams Company, a unit of Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) since September 1999, sells Eukanuba® and Iams® premium dog and cat foods (dry and canned) in 77 countries. Iams employs more than 2,000 people, and has annual sales in excess of $1 billion. Iams is the leader in the premium pet food segment in the U.S.

20. Marketing opportunity for other pet food manufacturers
Edited on Sat Feb-25-06 03:29 PM by sarahlee
Iams Iams is owned by Procter & Gamble in Cincinatti and their HQ isn't in SD, it's in Dayton, Ohio. But manufacturing takes place in South Dakota because of access to beef production.
http://www.iams.com

If we wanted to take on Iams, that might create a lot of impact. Talk to your veterinarians and pet store owners.

-Get them to carry alternatives that are equal to or better than Iams.

-Can you get the vets to recommend the alternatives?

-Talk to Nutro (and others) and tell them about the potential marketing opportunity. Have their sales representatives exploit the situation.

http://www.nutroproducts.com/contact.asp

Sample letter:

You guys have an EXTRAORDINARY marketing opportunity to exploit going on right now.

There are many people opposed to South Dakota's anti-abortion law that is going to the desk of the governor for signing. There is a lot of talk about boycotting Iam's pet food products because they are located in South Dakota

Your sales force could easily and readily exploit the situation by finding veterinarians and pet store owners that are sympathetic to the pro choice movement and women's reproductive rights.

I hope you take advantage of this national opportunity.

Enjoy!

11. Citibank
Citibank would be a great focal point for this. It's currently South Dakota's 5th largest single employer- only Ellsworth AFB and three hospitals are larger. Economically, it's a very big deal in South Dakota, having spawned a number of support businesses. On the other hand, it's small change to Citigroup, so any sort of significant pressure on them might lead them to consider whether it's worth the bad PR to continue to be one of South Dakota's largest employers.

Some history:
The reason Citibank ended up in South Dakota is that around 1980, the state got rid of it's usury laws- suddenly, there was no limit to what a credit card company could charge for interest or fees. Some SD lawmakers say they were just trying to help out banks squeezed between the high interest rates of the times and the existing usury laws, but the net effect was something like making gambling and prostitution legal- not so good for some of the people involved, but great for business. The law was signed by Governor Bill Janklow, who later became famous for driving through stop signs at 70 mph and killing a motorcyclist. But I digress.

Two years earlier, the Supreme Court ruled in Marquette National Bank v. First of Omaha Service Corp. that for interest caps, national banks (often designated So-and-so Bank, NA) were bound ONLY by the laws of the state they were located in, and not the laws of the state that the credit card holder was in. A bit of a reverse gold rush ensued as states got rid of usury limits and big banks moved their credit card operations there.

So anyway, Citibank moved much of it's credit card operations to South Dakota, at least nominally, and is still there. Again, this is a big deal to South Dakota, but probably small potatos to Citgroup, since there are now lots of states who've ditched their usury laws. If a significant number of people mailed in their cut-up Citbank cards with an explanation that they like Citibank, but they are troubled that they state they choose to headquarter their credit card operations in is anti-choice, Citibank might decide South Dakota's not worth the adverse publicity.

And a reply to that comment:
If you think this is the only reason to boycott Citibank there are many more, including that they are hardcore wingnut fundamentalists who want to force women to have no choice, so they can have more people to screw over.

See all of the following:

http://www.innercitypress.org/... -Their racism and starving the poor, and more.

http://www.paypalsucks.com/... -Horrible consumer practices and abuse of employees, and more

http://www.fuckcitibank.com - Horrible consumer practices and abuse of employees, and more.

http://www.buyblue.org/... -Shows how Citibank is a red company in donations, labor and human rights, environment, social and corporate responsibility, and industry pratices. Citigroup has 0 blue ratings as well.

http://www.dailykos.com/... -I have written a variety of diaries on why Citibank should be boycotted by all progressives for a whole variety of issues.

I further suggest anytime Shitibank sends you one of their credit card scams with a prepaid enevolpe sending it back with a letter of protest.

Boycott Citibank/Citicards. They are corporate thieves and terrorists.

Businesses as having a large presence in SD:
Gateway, Iams, Citibank; the western store Wall Drug; but I'm not finding any fortune 500 companies actually headquartered in SD.

John Morrell is the South Dakota's seventh largest employer. It's headquartered in Ohio, I think, but I believe South Dakota has it's largest pork processing plant.

According to the Atlantic Records tours site, O.A.R. is slated to play in Sioux Falls on April 28. The date doesn't appear on O.A.R.'s site but fits geographically with annnounced dates at St. John's in Collegeville, Minn., on April 29 and at UND in Grand Forks on April 30. Maybe we should let O.A.R know that they might want to skip South Dakota on this tour.

"Governor Mike Rounds of South Dakota today signed into law a Rapist's Bill of Rights. Taking advantage of a favorable political climate in order to appeal to his core constituency--men who violently force other women to have sex with them--Governor Rounds signed a bill that guarantees that a rapists who forcibly impregnates another woman has the right to father that child."

26. Rapist's Bill of Rights
OffenseNotDefense at Kos proposes the above mentioned paragraph as a press release in the event the Gov signs the bill. I think we can use the same argument against the legislature now, & state it in e-mails, etc to the Chamber of Commerce, in LTE's, etc.

It takes the argument off of bad women/doctors, & places the beneficiaries of the law in the spotlight. Let them defend protecting rapists & molesters.

South Dakota Abortion Ban Passes

The South Dakota Legislature has passed a statewide abortion ban. This new law was written as a direct challenge to Roe v Wade.

This law will adversely affect thousands of South Dakota women.

Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota needs your support today to fight this unconstitutional law.

25. Repairs only I think and Dem contributor
Actually Gateway is not in SD really. Headquarters is in California I think. Gateway has been a good supporter of Democrats in the past. More than Dell or others.

But maybe we can get them to help pressure the SD economic development folks. It can't hurt to ask.

Here's an idea

We could try to help rape victims from South Dakota get to domestic violence shelters in other states. Since all rape victims in that state are in signifigant danger now, this would be logical. I contacted the spouse abuse center in my town, and they said that if a rape victim from South Dakaota asked them for shelter, and they have space, they will take them in if they have no other options. Call the domestic violence shelters in your area--I will put up a web page with contact info for South Dakota raoe victims who need to leave the state.

30. No allowance for rape victims and this is what can happen
I was raped in NC and the rapist won "Joint" custody. Torment does not come close to describe what I live.
Rapist do have more rights than their victms. The children conceived via rape are the "forgotton victims". Yes, a rapist has rights over the children born from their violent act. My daughter and I live with the rapist in controll of our lives every day. He is allowed to stalk me in the courts now. I was even sued for reporting the rape, yet he was placed on a pedastal. He has millions to shove out to attorneys and I can't afford to pay an attorney for adaquate representation. There is no justice. Freedom is for the ones that can buy it. I was decieved my whole life into believing this lie about rights and freedom. I and this beautiful and innocent child are living proof that freedom is something you have to be able to afford. I am disgusted with the judicial system. They have not only tied and bound me to a rapist, but also the innocent child that was conceived by VIOLENCE! His violence has earned him even more control over my life.
