Walgreen Co. said it has put four Illinois pharmacists in the St. Louis area on unpaid leave for refusing to fill prescriptions for emergency contraception in violation of a state rule.

The four cited religious or moral objections to filling prescriptions for the morning-after pill and ''have said they would like to maintain their right to refuse to dispense, and in Illinois that is not an option," Walgreen spokeswoman Tiffani Bruce said.

A rule imposed by Governor Rod Blagojevich in April requires Illinois pharmacies that sell contraceptives approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to fill prescriptions for emergency birth control.

Pharmacies that do not fill prescriptions for any type of contraception are not required to follow the rule.

I am glad for the women in Illinois that their govenor did the right thing with that law. I wish all states would do the same!

I added my comment that if a pharmacist does not wish to fill a validly signed prescription, that person needs to find another profession. We don't pay him or her (indirectly) to bully us with personal religious views.

10. I cannot believe how STUPID these people are

Tell me. What do they think we women did before Plan B? I cannot tell you how many times I forgot to take my BC pills for a day or two. My doctor told me when I first started taking them that it was no problem, simply DOUBLE UP on them for a few days.

Do these IDIOT pharmacists realize this? How many "fertilized egg babies" women may be "killing" with just taking 2 or 3 plain old regular BC in one day from an ordinary script? THIS is your Plan B or Emergency BC pills.
