Hockey fan's wet dream. Three game sevens in two nights.
Pens vs. Caps tonight at 7 EDT. Ducks vs. Red Wings at 7 EDT and Hurricanes vs. Bruins at 8 EDT on Thursday.

Hockey at its best. Let's just hope the refs are invisible.

1. I don't follow hockey much, but am following it this year because of the Bruins...
...but it does seem to my untrained eye that there is more parity in hockey than in most pro sports.

5. As a Pens fan...
I have to hope someone goes knee to knee with OV just like he did to Gonch. Nothing personal, but when goes for a trip and ruins the career of one of the best Pens players (at his age... doubt he comes back) revenge would be nice :).

6. I'm a Gonchar fan - he's from Cheliabinsk, how can I NOT root for him -
and I don't think the hit was that dirty.

'Cheliabinsk' is Russian for 'shit city'. I've always liked 55.

Besides, the league is going to protect Ovechkin as it protects Crosby the way the NBA protected Johnson, Jordan and Bird.

8. 4 to 3 Capitals
Washington must control the first and third quarter if they want to continue. I see a ball bustin, body crunchin game with Scott Niedermayer being the enforcer. Power to them Caps...

11. Did you just say quarter?
You know there are only THREE of them right... but beyond that they aren't controlling the first period so far... too bad so sad, Pens/Canes conference final :).

9. there's no wishing in hockey...
I can't condone the knee to knee incident but shit happens in hockey. If one believes in karma, it will return tonight, hope not...It would be nice to see them Caps move into the next round..Good luck to your team. Should be an epic game tonight.

13. God, why do I love this team?
They are just completely shitting the bed tonight. Varly picked the worst time ever to finally have a bad game. Oh, and fuck Mike Green for completely not showing up in the entire series.

17. You would think that a series that goes 7 games would have a competitive
7th game...they were obviously evenly matched...I can't recall the last WS that went 7 games and the final game was a blowout.

22. Normally they do.
But this sort of thing has happened before and to better teams. In addition to the seven games over ten days in this series, Washington came back from a 3-1 deficit to win their last round in seven. Sometimes you're just so physically, mentally and emotionally drained you can't get the fire stoked again, even for a game seven. Washington's defensemen looked like they were skating in mud. And the kid goalie finally felt the pressure after that bad second goal. Add that to playing a team as formidable as the Pens and you have the makings of a blowout.

Edited on Wed May-13-09 09:21 PM by Cush
seriously, if the Caps were to some how acquire Crosby & Malkin they would still find a way to lose the Pens

As a Caps fan, I'm not even mad, this is all too familiar

One guy came to play for the Caps tonight. Everyone else was already on vacation.

20. It wouldn't matter how many scorers we have.
We'll continue to see them choke at playoff time until they get some damn defensemen that can actually play at the NHL level.

23. The defense looked bad last night.
And the goalie didn't help them at all after the seal broke. Green looked like he hit the wall, he was cooked and he'll learn from this. He's going to be a perennial Norris candidate. I don't know what the hell happened to Semin, he was making mistakes the whole series and scored nothing. He must take scoring pressure off of Ovechkin or at least set him up. He failed but he'll also learn from this. What did them in was the two unfortunate deflections in the first two OT games. They had to take Pittsburgh out early and they didn't get the bounces. Washington is going to be a team to reckon with for years to come. Ovechkin will get a Cup somewhere along the line.

25. And according to the WashPost this morning Crosby is a far better player. One game did that!
Yet another reason to hate the Wash Post.

The Pens are good. They are lucky and yesterday played better than the Caps. It's that simple.

How one can compare Crosby and Ovechkin when they play very different kinds of games is beyond me. I know that the NHL is thrilled to have a Canadian who is cute and speaks good English as their poster boy.

27. Well he does have a hell of a lot more help around him than Ovechkin.
If anything, this series was a testament to Ovie's greatness. I doubt it would've even gone 6 games without him.

28. That's how I see it and I think during the off season some talented folks will show that
they want to play with Ovechkin.

Crosby's very good but he and Ovechkin just play differently.

I'm anxious to know about Green's injury. He was a phone-in throughout the playoffs.

Semin and Backstrom didn't step up. Semin was AWOL after the Rangers. Credit to the Pens for neutralizing him.

24. Obviously, no complaints from me,
Pens played as well rounded game as I've see from any team. Completely dominated the Caps.

I think the tone was set pretty early with Fleury's save on Ovechkin early on. The game would have been much different if he scores.

Fatigue may have hurt the Caps last nite. Quite honestly, Varlamov didn't get much help from his team. The only soft goal was Adams'. He really had no chance on Crosby's. Fortunate bounce for the Pens. Other than maybe Malkin, there aren't any other players on the Pens who make that play. The goals by Guerin and Letang were just plain rockets. The Caps did nothing in the way of back checking last nite.

29. These two games are what game sevens should be.
Tight checking, hard fought, everyone spilling their buckets, a true test of wills. Games where it really is a shame that someone has to lose.
