How bizarre - the one game they can't call for rain
It's POURING in Philly, and they simply can't call what could be the last game of the series, especially with Philadelphia ahead.

4. This is BULLSHIT
That game either should NOT have been played or should have been called AS SOON AS it became official. But that fucking chickenshit Selig wanted the Rays either to tie or take the lead because he didn't want to end the series with the Phils in the lead. Fucking chickenshit.

5. More probably...
...he didn't want to inconvenience his rich friends' travel plans. That's why they play 2-3-2, you know.

6. Do you really want the Phillies to win the title like that though?

7. I can imagine some DUers asking for an asterisk
for the Phillies as champions if won in 5 1/2 inning called game. I'm no Bud Selig fan, and I'm not sure the game should have ever been started, but it definitely needs to go 9 innings.

I'd hate to see my team win like that in the deciding game. It just isn't right. :)

What do they get? One of these?

25. At least they would have played 9.
There's nothing much to do about the weather, but a lot of shit can happen from the 6th inning on...

Just out of curiosity, I went back to look at the entire playoffs to see what would happen if all games were 5 inning games (with an extra innings situation beginning after that).

No change to the Phillies-Brewers series, team leading after 5 always won.
No change to the Rays-White Sox series, team leading after 5 always won.
No change to the Dodgers-Cubs series, Cubs still get swept.
The Red Sox lose game 1 of the ALDS and have to go to game 5 at Anaheim.

In the ALCS, the Rays still win in 7 games (Boston wins game 2 and Tampa wins game 5 but end result is the same).
In the NLCS, the Dodgers win games 1, 3 and 4 and have a 3-2 lead going back to Philly.

Of course, I only had about 10 minutes to piss away on this. Who knows if these are the teams that would even be in the playoffs if all games were 5 innings. I imagine the Mets would have had a shot at the playoffs (at least a WC) with all the games their bullpen blew.

Either that or the Rays are God's team and he won't let them die in Philadelphia.

11. This is just Pennsylvania weather. It is snowing north of here this morning
Wed, and will be rainy and windy all day.
Rain supposed to clear by game time, but it will be cold ( mid 40's) with winds up to 30 mph.
Three weeks ago it was 80 and humid.

It's just Pennsylvania. If you don't like the weather, wait a while and it will be totally different.

I wonder why they built a dome in Florida, and an open stadium up here....
Go, Phils!

13. They built a dome for a couple of reasons.
1. The average temperature here from late june to the end of september is around 96 to 98 degrees with 90%+ humidity.
2. From mid july until the end of september it's likely to rain heavily between the hours of 3:00 pm to 10:00 pm almost every day.

I love the dome. It makes it comfortable to watch a game. I would hate to think of trying to sit in the sun down here and watch a game. You couldn't do it. They would have to carry you out before the 6th inning.

12. The game never should have started in the first place!
It was already raining when it started, the radar clearly showed that it was only going to get worse, the players couldn't see any of the fly balls coming out of the sky, fielders couldn't hold onto the ball, hitters were dealing with wet bats, high wind causing extremely uncomfortable wind chills and sideways rain soaking the players, and obviously the umpires couldn't call SHIT.

Now the field is ruined, the game is ruined, and I want to know why. I want to know who made the decision to start the game in the first place when they KNEW it was going to be a horrible night weatherwise. One of the umpires likened the weather last night to a low-grade hurricane. Yeah - no shit.

It's one thing to know the weather forecast, but start the game anyway because the weather was reasonable at game time; but it's entirely different when it's windy and raining at the start, and allow it to continue as planned.

I am a lifelong Phillies fan, but I say this on behalf of both teams. It wasn't fair to either the Phils or the Rays, nor was it fair to the umps and fans, imo. I can only hope that these guys manage to stay healthy throughout the rest of the series, since they were forced to stand in that mess in nothing more than the equivalent of sweat pants and a tshirt.

There is no excuse for allowing that game to start. I smell a rat, and I'm betting it's Bud Selig.

14. Worse than all that
they wasted Cole Hamels. And if they were going to call it they should have done it in the 4th inning when all the puddling started. Selig can say what he wants, the suits wanted that game tied so he could cover his ass with the rules.

Hamels should be rested for going three innings whenver they get the game restarted.

20. I don't know about that
they aren't playing on Tuesday, so that's another day's rest and he only has to muster up three innings (or a portion thereof) to finish the game. I think Hamels will continue game five.

26. Not a chance.
Hamels only pitches on 4 or more days rest. He is still in the game but will be pinch hit for immediately as he was due to lead off. We need to squeeze out a run in the bottom of the sixth and bring in our shut down guys. Cole gets the win and we take the series. That would be the ideal scenario and justice. Playing that game at all was a travesty but letting Tampa take advantage of the horrible conditions to tie the game and not making them pitch and defend in those same conditions was worse. Selig is an idiot.

21. Phils, Rays to resume Game 5 on Wednesday night
PHILADELPHIA—In the middle of all this World Series chaos, Joe Maddon sounded rather calm. Bumped to a hotel in Delaware until Game 5 resumes Wednesday night -- if the weather cooperates -- the Tampa Bay manager and his young team rode out the storm together. "I referred to it as kind of like getting snowed in, if I could go back to my roots," said Maddon, raised in nearby Hazleton, Pa.

Rain put the Series on hold Monday night, with the Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays suspended in the sixth inning with the score 2-all.

More rain and possible snow showers were expected Tuesday, so commissioner Bud Selig said Game 5 was tentatively set to resume at 8:37 p.m. Wednesday night.

And McCain said if he was President he wouldn't ask the World Series to be delayed so he could go on tv. :eyes:

22. Game should NOT have been played, or stopped halfway through an inning.
Now, Philly will get a dry at-bat.

AND - games should not start so late, especially when eastern time zone teams are the series participants.
