SAN FRANCISCO -- As part of their 50th anniversary in San Francisco, the Giants have been celebrating past players this season. The club will honor former outfielders in a pregame luncheon and on-field celebration on Saturday, and, yes, Barry Bonds was invited.
Since the Giants informed the slugger that they wouldn't re-sign him last September, he's yet to make a public appearance at AT&T Park. He's one of a number of players who haven't responded to the invitation, according to Blake Rhodes, director of media relations.
San Francisco invited several dozen players who played a certain number of games in the Bay Area. The club issued a press release last week with a list of players who have responded. To date, 26 players are expected to show.
"We hope that Barry will join us," Rhodes said. "We're still having guys call to say they'll attend, so he could still come."
This is the first event of 2008 to which Bonds has been invited, said Staci Slaughter, the Giants' senior vice president for communications. The club celebrated pitchers, catchers and infielders earlier this season, all occasions to which Bonds, logically, wasn't asked to attend.
