Rick Dutrow: "I can't keep my big mouth shut"
Edited on Wed Jun-11-08 04:21 PM by two gun sid
From The New York Times:
Desormeaux’s job seemed to be in jeopardy when Big Brown’s trainer, Rick Dutrow, pinned the Belmont loss on him, claiming on Monday that he had unnecessarily restrained Big Brown in the early part of the Belmont Stakes. Dutrow did not back off his criticism Tuesday and said he would look at changing jockeys.

“If it were up to me, I would seriously consider it,” Dutrow said. “But Kent was never my pick to begin with. That was Mike Iavarone’s move. My pick was always Edgar Prado. Edgar’s my man.”

Iavarone, the co-president of the syndicate that owns Big Brown, said Tuesday that no changes would be made before Big Brown’s next race, which will either be the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth on Aug. 3 or the Travers Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 23.

“As far as I am concerned, there will be no changes,” Iavarone said. “I don’t think anybody was happy with the ride, including Kent. But I’m not going to sit here and say that’s the reason why we couldn’t keep up with those horses. It had to be one element of many. Unless we find something wrong with the horse over the next few days, everything else is speculation.”

Bwahahaha. This isn't gonna end well for someone. If my trainer took this kinda bullshit to the press my horses would be out of his stalls before 10am. If he wants to yell and scream at me or I at him in the barn, fine, but we are teammates and that kinda shit doesn't get aired in public. Dutrow is a fuckstick. He actually has less class than Iavarone and I didn't think that was possible.
I'd like to apologize for saying Bud Delp was as much of an asshole as Dutrow.

1. I knew I didn't like the guy
All mouth, no integrity.

Hey two gun sid, who do you think are the true class-act trainers out there? I'm an extremely novice horseplayer, but Kiaran McCollough strikes me as a decent, and winning trainer. Any thoughts?

2. Most of them are good people...

Bill Turner, Barclay Tagg, Cowboy Jones, Dick Mandella, Nick Zito, lot's of them out there. Only a few in the business are really bad characters like Bobby Frankel, Jeff Mullins, Bob Baffert, Rick Dutrow. Google the trainer you like with the phrase 'medication violations'. That'll give you a good start.

3. Damn, I was hoping Big Brown would run in the Jim Dandy
That's the traditional Travers prep. I read a few days ago his next start would be in that race, on July 27. How the hell is he going to return cold in the Travers, at a mile and a quarter after a two and a half month layoff?

I'm uncertain if I'll make Saratoga this year but no way I'll still be there on August 23.

Buddy Delp had plenty of warmth. There was a wink and a nod side to him, at least I thought so. He wouldn't downgrade the opposition. The focus was his horse's genuine superiority, the "best to look through a bridle" stuff. I was getting fed up with Triple Crown winners becoming routine, as weird as that seems, so I wasn't exactly rooting for Bid in '79, but I loved Bud Delp. Compared to Laz Barrera he was pure charm school. Barrera was loved by the media --particularly Jimmy the Greek -- with the accent and all that crap, but deep down he would knife you, like when he told Life's Hope's jockey to scream at Slew in a rabbit's role in the '78 Jockey Club Gold Cup.

Delp never threw Franklin under the bus like Dutrow with Desormeaux. In fact, Delp told the press about the safety pin partially to deflect criticism of Franklin, chasing the longshot. Delp always said his biggest mistake was telling Franklin about the pin on the morning of the race, making him nervous. And before Delp died I read an article saying he still kept in touch with Franklin, 25+ years later. Franklin more or less gave Delp a convenient excuse to dump him for Shoemaker, getting caught with drugs a few weeks after the Belmont.

5. He's done I think....
I'd like to take a look at that bad foot of his. That could be a real issue with Big Brown. It sure didn't look like it was bothering him but shit who knows. If he's got to grow a new foot we'll never see him again. I kinda suspect that will be the case with the problems he's had before. Bad feet don't get no better with time. They heal but after awhile you're right back where you started. That's just my experience. I could be all wet too. Horses. They are such a puzzle.

Delp was pretty hard on his horses, I thought so anyways. But, like I said, I just never had a real feel for what he was really like.

4. UPS scrubbed all references to Big Brown from everything they have
You didn't see the guy with the UPS windbreaker beside that horse AFTER the race did you?

6. Really?
That's too bad because I was hoping UPS would sponsor some events.

7. Set your Tivo
From ESPN.com:
Big Brown's trainer is scheduled to testify next week at a Congressional hearing examining safety issues in thoroughbred racing.

Rick Dutrow was on the witness list released Wednesday for the June 19 hearing to be held by the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection. The hearing is titled "Breeding, Drugs, and Breakdowns: The State of Thoroughbred Horseracing and the Welfare of the Thoroughbred Racehorse."

Subcommittee chairman Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Ill., and ranking Republican Ed Whitfield of Kentucky recently announced plans for the hearing. They expressed concern about the sport after Eight Belles broke down last month at the Kentucky Derby and was euthanized on the track.

A statement by the subcommittee said that recent thoroughbred deaths "point to a persistent and widespread problem, raising significant questions about the sport and its governance."
