I hate Bud Selig and I hate DirectTV
Oh, they claim they're still trying to hammer out a deal to get Extra Innings on cable, but when I looked at the MLB website yesterday, it was a frickin' AD for DirectTV.

Even if I COULD get DirectTV (which I can't, because I rent) who wants to live in a place with a dish outside, like a hillbilly? Why not just splash a NASCAR sticker on my house?

1. I don't think having a dish shows someone to be a "hillbilly"
I'm not sure what you mean by that, in any case.

Object to the deal, if you want, but why disparage those with satellite tv? Seems rather petty.

2. But how does that make you feel ?
Lisa you must wash those negative emotions out of your soul. I have a dish on top of my house like most of my neighbors and not all of us are hillbillies and I have all my NASCAR paraphernalia in the garage. If you'd like I can keep you up to date on how the Phillies are doing this year. And whats with the big-ten and national championship games?

4. PS - winning the Big Ten
is far more prestigious than winning a national championship! It's all downhill after that.....

5. I have seen a one man team the last couple of weeks
and they got their butts kicked last night by a Florida team that at times looked like they were just going through the motions.

That's funny - the big ten championship trumping a national championship. Lisa you are a funny girl. You were right though, it was all downhill after that.

6. I'm SERIOUS. Don't you believe me?
The Big Ten ROCKS. The Big House is the best place in the world to watch a game. A beautiful fall day in Ann Arbor - a little nip in the air, the trees around the stadium in full color, that autumnal haze.......I simply can't describe how beautiful it is, but it's sending a chill down my spine.

7. Okay Lisa
If you want a beautiful setting for fall football there is only one place to be - FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS, in the foothills of the Ozarks. 75,000 red and white clad fans calling the Hogs and rocking the Stands. And you are gonna top that how? Calling the Wolverines?

10. I have heard that the Ozarks are beautiful.
But I still stand by Ann Arbor.

I once worked with Orville Faubus' granddaughter. When Arkansas was in the Final Four in Seattle, she put a pig's nose over her face after work and went to the game like that. In broad daylight!!!

3. It's my frustration showing!
No one seems to care about the fact that I can't get my Extra Innings package, so I am resorting to name calling! (Really, that's all it is). I can't watch the Tigers! I am beyond pissed. Here's what I've done:

Called MLB twice
Called the Tigers twice
Emailed MLB feedback
Emailed the Players' Association
Called all of my representatives
Called Arlen Specter's office
Emailed John Kerry's office
Signed a petition to keep baseball on cable
Signed a petition to dump Bud Selig as Commissioner
Emailed the president of MLB

And the effect? Zilch, zip, nada.

9. The woman at the Tigers' office was very sympathetic
She said her whole family was complaining about it. In fact, when I first called, back in January, they told me "you might win on this one". Clearly, they don't have clout.

11. they have clout
they own 1/28th of the league. they just would prefer the money from the DirecTV deal over your convenience.

12. How do you know that?
Of course, this story has been completely buried, and ESPN (whom I also tried to contact) barely covers it - I think DirectTV carries more of their channels than Comcast does - but I have absolutely no evidence that any individual teams colluded in this deal. Also, the Tigers are profitable and Mike Illytch has been a fairly fan-friendly owner, so I'm not sure why you are dogging the Tigers.

15. the teams own the league, you know that, right?
(I am dogging on every team, by the way, this just happens to be about the Tigers) the Comissioner works directly for the owners, not the other way round. saying that the tigers don't have clout is simply doing them a disservice. the fact is that people are complaining to EVERY team (I bet someone even wants to watch the Devil Rays on cable somewhere, for some reason) and baseball, as a whole, just doesn't care. the individuals working in the offices may care, but the owners simply don't care enough to make a different outcome happen. If they did care, they would sign a deal with another outlet.

13. The bratwurst Machiavelli strikes again
some wag at Slate named Selig that.

Seeing as how so few people can actually get satellite, maybe they need to change their unofficial motto to "18 Percent of the Nation's Pastime" or something. :P

14. I like it!
Of course, according to HIM, the number of people who CAN'T get DirectTV is "very, very small". He claims to have agonized over this decision. Snort.

16. Going to Hate Him More
I think you are going to hate him more when you learn he made $14 million last year. You may already know that, but if you did not know you have been informed. It was reported today in the Yahoo sports section.

18. You've got a lot of company LisaM. Opening 'Day' should NOT be on cable either.
Opening Day for the league or individual teams. It should be on free tv.

19. I agree with that, too.
Not only is it the national pasttime, the public funds a lot of teams and stadiums - I know that we do in Seattle. I don't particularly begrudge that personally because 1) the Kingdome stunk, and was dangerous; and 2) I think a nice stadium can be an asset to the community. And you can go to games at Safeco Field for as little as $7 (or you could last year). However, with everything they've received from municipalities, it's time for baseball to give back.

22. Alas DirectTv has me by the short and curlies
Because I can't go without seeing my NY Giants in the fall and DirecTv owns the NFL.

I live in San Diego and its became tiresome to go to a sports bar at 10am on Sunday just to catch my team.

Now after 3 years of splitting the ExtraInnings package with a good friend at his house, we had to switch the arrangement to my place.

The only bonus is that many Yankees games are in HD because of YES and DirectTv doesn't charge extra for HD games like they do with football.

I hate them but I need them.

My dish is out of the line of sight and I'm far from a hick as I live in inner city Philadelphia. Your generalizations are ludicrous and your ignorance is staggering.
