Poll question: Appropriate punishment for trying to chop a guy's head off?
Edited on Sun Mar-11-07 05:11 PM by BlooInBloo
For the NHL, it's apparently the rest of the season + playoffs + next season until 25 games have been missed.

Given that criminal assault charges aren't in the offing, my own feeling is that this is reasonably close to appropriate. What do you think?

EDIT: Forgot the word "a" in 2nd poll option.

1. End Person's Career
I tend to think if a player does something like that they should be banned from the sport. On a somewhat different point I am somewhat surprised that the media is not making more of a big deal out of this. Why are they not talking about how this shows how violent a sport hockey has become. Can you imagine what they would be saying if some nba players had tried something like this with another player.

11. NBA is tougher on its players because there is no barrier between players and fans.
I was at a college basketball game about 15 years ago when a brawl broke out between opposing players and fans. That can't happen in hockey. Violence is limited to players by the glass for the most part. Okay, there's Ti Domi in Philly...

16. People care about the NBA
If don't live in a NHL city or canada, you will never see a article in the newspaper or the scores on the evening news unless it's the stanley cup or the all-star game.

3. It was an understandable reaction.
The guy Simon hit threw a terrible cheap shot on him from behind, smashing his face into the glass. As bad a trangression in my opinion as Simon's reaction. Too heavy a sentence.

7. I should've made the poll six-optioned...
Adding the variable: "Have played a significant amount of hockey."

In case there's a significant disconnect between the feelings of the hockey-playing crowd and the nots.

12. Any player that deliberately injures another player should miss the same amount of time...
If the injured guy is out for the season,so are you.

In this case I think it looks worse than it was.I've seen worse at Friday night pickup games. However,Simon was wrong either way,so the punishment was about right.

14. A stick is an instrument of the game
That being said, it can also be a weapon. Chris Simon used his stick as a weapon to inflict bodily injury on another player. There is NO room in the game for this. He should be glad I am not Colin Campbell because he would be looking for a new line of work.

15. Suspensions should be based on two factors
A: the level of premeditation in the illegal act.

B: the injury that resulted from said illegal act.

Which is why I belive the penalty Simon was handed was waaaay too harsh. It was (a) something done in the heat of the moment after he took a cheap shot from behind, and (b) only resulted in a few stitches.

I would have given him 10, 15 games at most.
