That was the worst trade of the past decade. But not the worst ever, nor was the Cepeda one.
There's always Ernie Broglio for Lou Brock. Or Ivan DeJesus for Larry Bowa (and throw-in prospect Ryne Sandberg). Or Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek for Heathcliff Slocumb. Jeff Bagwell for Larry Andersen, John Smoltz for Doyle Alexander, Pedro Martinez for Delino DeShields, a package of players which included Randy Johnson for Mark Langston, a package of players which included Nolan Ryan for Jim Fregosi. Oh and of course Babe Ruth for cash.
As for Cepeda/Sadecki, it was a fairly dumb trade, Cepeda being an icon and all, but Sadecki's numbers weren't all that terrible. Yeah, he went 12-18 in 1968, but he had a 2.91 ERA, which was good even for mound-inflated '68 (on par with the league average of 2.96). Cepeda's power numbers (17 home runs for St. Louis in '66 for the Cards after the trade, 25 in '67) made up for that, though, and Sadecki was obviously not the icon Cepeda was. So not the worst trade ever, but still pretty bad.
I only analyzed because I love the hindsight of trade aftermaths.
